My reasons:

1: I like crashing.
2: I can't find anything else to do on a summer weekend.
3: Driving 3 hours for a 45 minute event just makes sense.
4: All the prize money.

Just kidding. I love racing. I just don't know why.

George W. Bush is from Texas. After reading this, does that make more sense now? Oh yes.

Hang in there America. Jan. 2009 is only 23 months away.

1. Because without somebody riding it, I actually have a shot of beating my bike in a foot race.

Sorry but Baby Bush (or as the dear departed Molly calls him 'Shrub') is from your neighborhood, Connecticut, but I'm sure smart big city feller like yerself knew that already. Besides I live in Austin, not Texas.

When you're done with a really epic race or training and you talk to your friends afterwards. That feeling you get when everything your friends say is funny. Yeah dude. I live for that.

Two handed salutes. That'll keep you coming back for more.

Plus, that feeling of rolling a through and off break at 48kph and the legs are cutting the wind like butter. Form is always a nice feeling.

I dont' race, I coach. But I have similar ten reasons:
1) Teaching younger people what I love about the sport
2) Teaching people how to do it relatively safely
3) Watching them win, place, show
4) Helping them appreciate success and failure
5) Stewardship - the sport isn't about me
6) Talking about farts and other topics on long van trips
7) Discounts on equipment from our sponsors
8) Learning how I relate to different people
9) Getting more people into the sport
10) Having a large group of people that know what I mean when I say "Keep the rubber side down"

That is not the complete picture, he went to prep-school at the Phillips Academy prep school at Andover and then attended college at Yale. One could easily make the argument that his formative years were not spent in Texas but in the North East Ivy League. My reply to Putzcad was more for his inference that because I made a tongue-in-cheek post about why I race my bike Texans are as dumb as our President. When in fact our dear President spent a good portion of his life living and being educated in Putzcads backyard.

Go back and hang out in P & R where you belong . . . I can't believe you turned this post into a Bush-bashing. It's pitiful.

As stupid as it sounds, I really do believe H.G. Wells:

When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race. ~H.G. Wells

I do feel we'd be better off if everyone rode bicycles!

But this man really had it right, and conveys my own attitude behind cycling:

When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking. ~Sir Arthur Conan Doyle~

I feel exactly the same way....I've often wondered why that is. After last weeks TT I felt like I was going to throw up, my legs really hurt and I had that wonderful metalic taste in my mouth you get from an all out effort. I also had a big grin on my mug, there is something wrong with us
