Amgen might become part of pro tour!
Could you imagine, a 3-week pro tour event in the USA? That's be incredible!

The head of the UCI says that they're already considering it and think it has the potential to join the pro tour.

Let me spell it out for you, buddy. Amgen MAKES EPO. Professional cyclists TAKE EPO.
And besides, Amgen is not the name of the race. It's the Tour of California. It will continue to be the Tour of California if/when Amgen ceases to be the title sponsor.

And actually, the official name IS the "Amgen Tour of California." That is the legal name, although if it eventually gets a diff. sponsor that will change.

I don't see it happening. It's too early in the season for a grand tour. They would likely have to move it to to spring at which point it would conflict with the classics. I can see them stretching it to 10 days at its current slot but thats it.

Same with the FedEx Orange Bowl...it's the Orange Bowl. Or the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl...it's the Fiesta Bowl.
Sponsor names do not reflect the "actual" name of the event, and the event does not change or lose anything with the addition or loss of a sponsor's name.

Also, the Tour of California, unless it changes dates, as Dial Tone said, will probably never achieve Grand Tour status. 1 week, Paris-Nice/Tour de Romandie/Tour de Swiss status, perhaps.

It's at the end of the article.
