Hi,

Sort of new race rig, Lapierre Xelius:

Most everything came off of the R3 (no more Cervélo for me). New seatpost (first 31.6 mm post in my inventory) and new cables were all I needed. Took the opportunity to get rid of the TUFO tires that I was running and put on some Continental Competition tires that I'd bought over the winter.

Raced it today and it didn't seem to have any of the handling quirks of the R3. It weighs 15 pounds even as shown -- about a quarter pound heavier than the R3.

I am racing them both this year. Centaur on the Guerciotti and Chorus 10 (with Centaur shifters) on the Merckx. The Merckx also has a Regal saddle and Tacx bottle cages now.

Got a new stem the other day and went for a ride. So much better. Its a 120mm 17 degree compared to my old 110mm 17 degree. What a difference those 10mm make.

Hi,

The biggest problem with the R3 was noticeable (significant?) understeer in fast crit corners. I didn't realize how short the front-center dimension was on 51 cm Cervélos before I bought the bike. There must have been something about how my weight was distributed on the bike that was causing me the problem.

The last straw was at a crit this past March on a course where I've raced hundreds (thousands?) of miles. I was near the back of the pack on a slightly downhill, 90° right-hand corner. The wind was a little gusty and between the wind and the cornering speed I lost most of the grip on my front tire. I almost hit the outside curb. My teammate who was behind me said, "You could have taken that corner a little wider."

The secondary issue with the front-center dimension was toe overlap. I have somewhat large feet for my height and some other ergonomic foibles that mean that I have toe overlap on all of my bikes. However, with the Cervélo it was more like foot overlap. On steep hills (>15%) I would occasionally catch my foot on my front tire. Startling to say the least when you're grinding up a hill.
