SRAM is so Hot Right Now

Repost with sexier title...

On my new Pedal Force QS3 the front derailleur rubs the chain in the big ring no matter what I do. I have the limit screw all the way out (the correct one) and have tried several angles and heights off the big chain ring. It's a BB30, S-works cranks, Dura-Ace chain ring. No matter how I do it, it will not shift far enough out. It's a clamp on FD.

Does it sound like I need to try another FD? The clamp on is not really adjustable is it (besides height and angle and limit screws)?

Do you have the cable clamped right on the FD?

The cable is supposed to go over top the little tab molded in by the pinch bolt, not under.

Throw some pictures up of it. We'll be able to give you better advice from that.

Yes, it's correct. I used the guide on the park tools website just to make sure. It's not rocket science, so unless there is some magical adjuster that I don't know about this needs a new FD.

There was one frame I worked on where the braze on tab on the frame was hitting the FD thus not allowing the FD to move as far out as it needed.

Just needed to grind down the tab so it would clear the FD

This should work. Notice there is a gap where the L screw does not touch. The FD is all the way out at this point, and in the 11-12-13 it rubs. I could ride it, but it produces a decent amount of noise.

Any ideas?

Cable tension, you need more of it.

If the limit screw is all the way out, can you move the cage over more with your finger? I'm thinking j00 just don't have enough cable tension.

Yeah, just pull the cable away from the frame and see if it can go any further. If so, you need more cable tension. In that image, it looks like this is the problem.

When you shift all the way to the small ring, is there any slack in the cable ? If so, unscrew the bolt & take up the slack.

(Why is this not in the Mechanic forum ?)

Cable tension is very high. Anyways, if you read the Park Tool FD installation, they say not to have too much tension when it's in the small gear. Regardless, it's pretty tight right now. I can move it a tiny bit more but it still rubs a little in the 11 tooth. All of the other FD installs I've done I could throw the chain all the way over the big ring unless I adjusted the limit screw. Oh and the reason this is not in the mechanic forum is because there is never any traffic. Anyways, I think online help is complete, I will let bdcheung show me how it's done.

Is the chainline adjustable on that crank/bb?

If everything is right about the FD, and it still won't go out far enough, it can mean the rings themselves are too far out.

I haven't worked with that BB to know if it's adjustable. (i.e can you move spacers from one side to the other?)

I hate to be rude, but if it's correct, then why is it rubbing?

That was in response to "is the cable on the correct side of the tab" not "is it installed correctly".

User error, bah. I've done like 4 FDs without any issues. Certainly could be user error, but it smells like the BB30 is too wide and maybe not pressed in correctly.

Oh the almighty bdcheung will help. BD, I'll ride it to your house today.

did you check to see if the fd was actually hitting the frame per nitropowered's reply? clearly, if the set screw isn't preventing the fd from moving over, something else must be. it could be the fd hitting the frame at the top, the cable tension not being high enough (although you seem to indicate that you can't push it over any further with your hand), the max extension of the fd itself (hypothetically caused by improper bb30 spacing), or some other variable which i cannot discern.

I did, the FD is clamp on and one piece. It's a clean separation between the frame and everything. Thanks all for the help, I will post back what I jacked up once we figure it out.

BD fixed it, he is awesome.

I was not tightening the cable clamp enough and the cable was slowly loosening. On my ride over to his place it was actually not rubbing and then it started again. Wish I had his bike mechanic setup, you could probably build frames in his garage. I will now retreat with my tail between my legs.
