It wasn't as close as it looks. In the video it's about a quarter wheel.

Amen brother. In my races we keep having these ******bags attack from 1' out, ruining everything. And I seem incapable of picking the correct wheel to follow.

Pretty much. It appears that I'm going to have to smarten up considerably to have any hope of ending the bullying by the skinny non-sprinter types.

Your position looks much better than you give credit to; just remember what's optimal for one guy may not be the best for you

I mean in terms of efficiency. Mine isn't bad and that's why I'm lumped in with the top group. But to break out of that group I think there are some tweaks to be made. Bringing my elbows a little more together, for one. Remembering to drop my head level more, too.

Everyone's different. I'm sure this guy would beat your winner above, and your position looks pretty similar (other than the 3x leg mass thing). Maybe you should make these changes, maybe not. I'd look into some of RX and Nate's discussions on testing. For starters, RX's terminal velocity stuff could be very useful. My aero testing on the cheap stuff might be useful if you have someone who will ride with you for this.

collegiate road nationals this past weekend in Richmond, VA. this is from Libby Hill, the cobbled climb on the course. I'm in the light blue jersey w/ the gopro on my helmet (i'll upload some footage later). Only lasted 3 laps of 7 before I got popped off, but fared better than about 100 other guys behind me (total field was ~170). most brutal race I've done, this hill wasn't even the worst part. the finishing climb and crazy wind made it completely impossible to chase back on. 2 of my teammates who are much stronger than I placed 21st and 23rd, my other teammate got stuck behind some landmines on the first lap and never made it to the main pack since we were in the 3rd and 4th waves of callups (started around ~120th wheel, sprinting from the start to catch up because of the narrow road). same course as the world championships next year

Awesome photo, Zitter. I think I saw you pull out of the race, I was in the feed zone on Broad St. handing up to my VCU teammates when a guy with a gopro mounted like that pulled up and walked out of it. Our two guys dropped out within a lap of you as well, one had a Di2 problem going back to his crash while leading the crit the day before and the other was cooked after winning the time trial and hanging on to the crit. I raced in the 3/4 crit on Saturday and loved that course as well, I only heard good things about the road race circuit and I loved watching you guys from Libby Hill Park, I will definitely camp out there next year for the pros. Glad you enjoyed the city!

Yep, that was me haha. I decided to pull out at the end of the lap before I got whistled off so I technically DNF'd, although I would've placed around 70-75th. I was chatting with one of the VCU guys before the race (the one who crashed, there's video of it on youtube from a spectator), we were both definitely cooked from the crit but we still had fun. Hitting that hill like 20+ times was crazy. I was happy the humidity wasn't too bad, but it was rather hot. It was my first time in Richmond and I definitely liked the city! Can't wait to watch worlds next year, you can appreciate it a lot more after having raced that circuit.

Nice, funny to run into bike forums people in the wild, so to speak. Evan was super bummed about that crash, he'd lapped two A fields and done a lot of winning this season so we all thought he had a good shot at the win in the crit. Let me know when you post your video, I'd love to see that course from a 1st person perspective.

Here's clips from the crit. Starting from the back really sucked. The rest of the raw footage is uploading. I have 3 laps of the road race too
