I'm an unattached Cat5, but I'd like to be on one of the local teams (there are quite a few to choose from in St. Louis) if only to have "friendly faces" in the field.
If I was interested in seeing who had the strongest legs, lungs, and heart I'd run TT, but I'm more interested in the whole racecraft element of Criterium racing, and I'm pretty sure that the best way to learn racecraft is on a team.

Having a team and having teammates are two completely different topics. I'm on a "team" but my "teammates" are seldom around. In fact, the ones that I thought were my "teammates" up and left to other teams for a free meal ticket (better sponsorship). I prefer a team that's friends first, teammates second. Afterall, we ride / race bikes for fun, if you don't have fun with the people on your "team", what's the point? I prefer riding with people which is why I joined a team with the idea that we'd ride together and I'd get to know more people with the same interests, unfortunately, I think I ride more by myself now than I did when I was "unattached" and rode with anyone and everyone. Maybe I need to lose the team...
