Silly question on pro races
How come the single day races rarely seem to involve a bunch sprint finish (maybe I havent seen enough races yet)?
I thought it was nearly impossible for riders to be able to break the peleton on a flat course?

Flat stage races tend to have this. Hilly races usually break up the field into the good climbers vs. the not-so-good climbers. Flat stages are generally dominated by sprinters whose teams will lead them out to the finish and let them sprint for the win. As far as one day races go - I think again it depends on whether or not the course is hilly.

I agree with flyefisher's analysis. It's always been hard to successfully break on a flat race. The peloton tends to move along at high speed and also the sprinter's teams know that these are "their" races so they'll aggrssively chase breaks. The advent of 2 way radio makes breaking even harder as there's no more "out of sight-out of mind" factor anymore.
You need some climbs.
