Upgrade Points, where are you at?

I just did my first sanctioned race this season and came 5th, Cat 3 (a 23km TT). So I've got 2 points! Huzzah! We still have quite a few sanctioned events, and of those, several are two, three, or four stages. So I hold out hope.

You?

Duke of Kent 05-05-07 09:50 AM

You have 0 points.

Only mass start races count.

that also meet field and distance requirements

I also have 0 points. I'm not worried, the season is young.

I expect to get some next weekend at Bear Mountain: a race with an actual sustained climb. Its 2.5mi @ 5% I think, and we'll be doing it 5 times! Just what my skinny ass needs.

Cat 3's don't get upgrade points for TT's??

Lithuania 05-05-07 09:35 PM

The OP is in canada. Perhaps the rules are different for upgrading?

HillMut 05-05-07 09:37 PM

I'm pretty sure cat 2-4 can pick up points for placing in a TT here too...

If they did, I would be a cat 1 by now. Sorry. Upgrade points for mass start road races only. However, stage races (that have a TT as part of the GC) do count toward points but only for the overall GC, not for the individual TT.

I am not sure if the original title asks about how many upgrade points other people have, but I have 31 of the needed 25 points. So what is that? Cat-2-o-meter 122%?

sverrefehn 05-05-07 09:55 PM

As per USCF rules, individual time trials do not count for upgrades, only mass start races.

Not in British Columbia.

Nice try though.

They won't let you upgrade if all your points are from TT's or Hill Climbs. You need to have some placings in mass start events as well.

Yes the original intent of the thread was for people to lament, or brag, about their tally this season! :p

Why not upgrade? Or will you run out the rest of the season as a 3 and then use the off season to focus on training for 1/2?

Haven't decided if I really want to upgrade. Upgrade means I won't be able to do a lot more races (because of work constraints). Also, my original goals this season involved a cat 3 cup competition, which upgrading takes me out of. In the northeast, one often has the choice to race in p/1/2/3 events or in cat 3 alone (or cat 3/4). As such, I can still test myself against the big boys for those races that start earlier. However, for scheduling purposes the option of various events/course lengths suits me better.

No they can't here in Nor Cal/Nor Nev, it must be a mass start event.

How come they don't have a Cat 5 race at Bear Mountain?

Ah well....hopefully can do that one next year.

El Diablo Rojo 05-06-07 12:10 PM

I'm 14 points away from moving to cat 3. My season got a bit derailed by illness but I'm coming back and will hopefully have the needed points by the end of June.

My guess is that they think the 2.5mi climb and the 60mph downhill with a hairpin turn at the bottom might be too much for new racers to handle.

recneps 05-06-07 01:25 PM

signature, after 2 cat 4 races. Plan is to upgrade by the end of july and go to un23 states.

sverrefehn 05-06-07 01:48 PM

I need 15 points to move up to the 3's.
Or, two more top tens and I can do the "25 starts and 10 top tens" method. I'd rather have the points though as that would indicate stronger racing.

ronbridal 05-06-07 08:53 PM

Took first today in a Cat 4 race so I officially have 7 points toward my upgrade. Many more races to come.

Frunkin 05-06-07 09:03 PM

eight more starts till cat 4 WOO-WOOOO

Vinokurtov 05-06-07 09:04 PM

15 points of 25 to cat up.

cat4ever 05-07-07 04:23 AM

0 points in what is now 9 races (not including time trials) this year as a cat 3. Will probably be stuck on 0 for a while unless there is a pan flat, time based stage race with a long time trial in it.

LowCel 05-07-07 04:43 AM

I only have five points so far as a cat 4. That came from a second place. It will be a while before I can upgrade though since I'm now in mountain bike season.
