So just over a year ago I bought prebuilt PT/SL built into a DT swiss Rr1.1 rim. 32 spokes. All should be good.

The wheel build wasn't that great. Individual non-drive spokes would loosen often, then one day after getting caught in the rain, the entire non-drive side go so loose that the drive-side spokes started rubbing the rear derailluer. I added tension, thought all was better.

Now, 2 weeks later. Stress fractures around 2/3 of the drive side spokes. The LBS says that it's a tension issue and there's not a chance that QBP (the builder) or DTswiss is going to replace it. On top of that, apparently the Rr 1.1 isn't that strong of a rim. It's light, and not meant for hard training. This is news to me. I got this wheel over christmas of 2005. It has 5000 miles maybe.... not enough to need to be rebuilt.

I'm not sure who I'm mad at. I just wish I knew that the PT laced to the rr1.1 would NOT be as strong as I thought it would be.

Resolution: $120, an additional 200g, and 4 days will get me a built up velocity deep V (supposedly a super stong rim), all black spokes/nipples and hopefully another 10,000 miles before I need another rebuild.

Sounds like you rebuilt it the right way too bad you had all the inital trouble.

Hrm...I'm at 6k miles on my build - albeit a Pro, not an SL - and I haven't had any issues with the wheel. I wore out some of the internals in the PT hub, but that's attributable to a lot of hours spent on the trainer after knee surgery.

The DT RR 1.1 rim weighs 415g, and a Deep V will have you looking at 520g...not a major difference, I wouldn't call the 1.1 a "light rim" especially not built up with the meaty arsed spokes it comes with from Quality Wheel House.

Quality hand builds their wheels. the wheels we have ordered aren't too bad when they come out of the box. but obviously there are some tweaks you'll have to make since the wheels do get banged around in shipping.

If we are busy, we'll get a prebuilt from Quality. If we are not, I'll hand build them. If I hand build them, there is only one person to blame for a bad wheel instead of me getting blamed for a bad wheel from another builder.

Personally, Ive had problems with my powertap sl wheelbuild. Probably because the hub flanges are so big and I'm running a high dish campy set up. Spoke tension is really uneven between the left and right. Best solution will probably be using an offset spoke bed rim. Currently using a Velocity Aerohead but will soon replace it with an Aerohead OC.

Theres nothing wrong with the components, its just a bad build. You simply have a typical case of undertensioned wheel, breaking non-drive side spokes and eventual loosening of all the spokes.

Use a different wheel builder.

Also consider the rim. The r1.1 is a strong rim... but the single eyelet version has been known to have some problems with cracking around the eyelets. DT WILL warranty this... as I imagine QBP would as well, since it is a documented problem. The double eyelet verion doesn't have this problem. I don't know what version QBP uses to build these wheels.

That said, I have a couple wheelsets with the single eyelet r1.1 rims and have had zero issues. How heavy are you? I really think going to a Deep V is overkill.... look at a Velocity Aerohead OC rear specific wheel. It will build up really nice with the high flanges on teh PT hub.... and it will be 100 grams lighter.

Just put down for a set of Velocity aeroheads (front and OC rear) with the PT on the back. Should have them at the end of next week. Will certainly be posting my opinions on that one.
