Just read it on the news. He 's going to focus on instructing young riders in the States.

Hmm... It has more to do with the fact that Discovery Channel stops the sponsoring at the end of the year. Seems difficult to find a new main sponsor, so then he decided it was time for some other projects. Also, if the team stops to exist, probably most riders will have to find a new team as well.

yeah, that's true. cyclingnews also reports that only rabobank is looking for a DS, so not too many jobs out there aparently. i guess my knee jerk reaction to any cycling news these days is to be skeptical.

The entire team has disbanded...Pro Tour license up for grabs. Wonder if Vaughters will now change his plans and try to make a move to the Pro Tour in '08 vs '09

Of course, there's more than just laying down cash for the license...but regardless, speculation has already begun that Slipstream will make the move earlier than expected.
Though in the end, I doubt it (and hope they don't...they'd need to race all three Grand tours and I don't think his team is prepared for that, regardles of the new riders they've signed).

Weve all heard the stories about JB, throwing bags of blood down the drain, not letting certain people be team leader without the 'full treatment'. I'm not going to echo things I cant honestly confirm.

Hmm, that is if Pro Tour will still exist by then. I thought that ASO declared not to be part of UCI (and Pro Tour) anymore.

Yeah, a bunch of riders will be available. Especially given this situation. But it all depends on how much money Slipstream can come up with...if memory serves, Postal/Disco was about $20ish million budget-wise. And that was one of the bigger operations.
There's a natural evolution in this sport and teams come and go...but the 99ers wouldn't know about that. There's a ton of pressure running a big race team like this. Maybe everyone just said it's time to move on. Maybe everything that's going on is not being told to the pundits.
Anybody want to buy a bus or a couple of nice cars???

They were asking $45mil over 3 yrs and that's just for TITLE sponsorship. No way JV can come up with a figure anywhere near that. His backer (Doug whatshisname) surely wouldn't foot it. Any other good Americans on the Disco squad that Slipstream can steal cheap now? Tony Cruz? McCartney?

I am thrilled Bruyneel is gone. He was bad for the sport.
The rider who get hurt the most by this...Tom Danielson. He is never going to race in the European tour again, so he had better his last few weeks in Spain. He will be back on the US Domestic racing scene next year....Toyota-United would be a good fit.

What are your thoughts on this...I've not followed him much and am curious about your take on him.

The best part is Bruyneel was going all the way to China looking for a sponsor. He could have easily brought down the amount to a more reasonable amount of say 18 - 21 million. Many Pro Tour teams run on below $10,000,000 per year as a total operating budget.
I am glad we do not have to hear about Bruyneel or see Lance anymore. The quicker these guys get away from Pro cycling the better it will be. Lance is a reminder of an era forever tainted by PED's, and he was the leader of the tribe. He and Barry Bonds should hang out together, and reminisce over their routines and cycles.

So I have an opinion. It is a forum for discussing Road Bike Racing. Should I have posted this instead...
I am neither happy nor sad Bruyneel is gone. I have no opinion on anything whatsoever. I am a void.

Cruz and McCartney, while very good riders are not grand tour world class riders. And this team has always been about Grand Tours...
People somehow still associate Disco as being an "American Team"...Leipheimer and Hincapie in their top group, then Danielson in the second tier. Popo is Ukranian, Paulinho is Portugese, Noval, Contador, Martinez, Spain, and Gusev is Russian. It is or was owned by a couple of Americans, but they've always been about signing the best riders, regardless, especially after 1999.
I don't think this is any bigger of a deal than when Mapei called it quits. They were the winningest team of all time and bagged it.
