Mengoni GP report and Video

Ok, so it is my second attempt at a helmet cam. I know that sometimes things are hard to read. It has to do mostly with the compression that YouTube does. Regardless, go here to see the report, pictures, and the YouTube Video.

It was also quite nice to meet Fellow BFer Marcelinyc. Hope to see you at Bear!

Thanks. I don't want to call Jerry a weasel. He raced intelligently. Yeah, he almost doomed the break, but some of his final pulls probably kept us out of the maw of the chasing pack. After the race he was an incredibly gracious person. He seemed the type I would gladly have a drink with. And while I did not like the strategy, he did what he had to for him. I have been in enough breaks to know that being sat on sucks, but it is a part of the game. I am sure people will have choice words for me like being a sandbagger because I can win a hill sprint with the weight penalty of a helmet cam.

PCad, now that you have seen both prospect and CP from the inside, I have to ask, is it anything like the Nyack ride? I mean, is the "racing" the same in both?

Yeah, it would seem silly for a sandbagger to call a wheelsucker a weasel. But seriously, what's it going to take for you to upgrade?

Actually, Jerry was just being crafty, which is his typical style in NYC races or on Nyack. I admire his smarts, he beats guys who I think are faster/fitter with sheer timing and balls. You gotta love that.

I've raced in PP and CP enough myself to observe this: in some respects those races are often easier than Nyack for a couple of reasons: smaller pack, tougher terrain @ Nyack, and often the fastest 10 guys @ Nyack are guys like Jerry and yourself, so once you start slammin' up Scratchup road (a .5 mile climb with 15% grades and moonwalk craters 3 miles from the Hook Mtn. finish) it does get interesting, and it selects the 25-35 survivors to that point down to <20 by the time we hit 9W. So if I can survive to 9W I'm often in the top 10 @ Nyack (like today). I was certainly first in the 50+ category : ). While I don't have the mojo to hang with guys like you on that last climb, I'm not the worst climber, so I wind up in between the leaders and the 'I have nothin for this climb after 50 hard miles' bunch.

Nyack is much more like an open road race, more opportunities to attack and make it stick than on a PP or CP course in my view. A guy like you could solo away on a good day, or certainly launch a move that winds up being a 2-4 man winning break. Nyack is big fun, the faster you are the funner it gets, so you'd love it. Great bunch, very friendly ride, very fast at times, really no Road Nazi bullsiht despite the decent racing crew that frequents the ride. Very safe, rarely do we see crashes. And of course the Post Nyack Wrap Up @ the Runcible Spoon (a coffee shop in Nyack) is also fun. Today Ben from West Point was first over Hook, he's a newly minted Cat 2. He looks like he's 6'2" 139 lbs. And I do not exaggerate : ). The West Point guys are very cool, they show up on Nyack quite a bit.

Jerry was there today. I told him after getting 2nd @ Mengoni he should be home taking Advil like Dr. W. And if you're not a Cat 2 by now, shouldn't you be arrested by the USCF?

Advil not for me! I am one of those drug free loonies. Have not popped a pill (outside of vitamins) since I was 10. Gotta stay clean for when the USCF comes looking for urine and blood. If they catch me! I am a cat 2 posing as a cat 3 on the lam?

Pcad on the other hand eats Advil on Sunday like blonduathlongrl eats bon bons.

Average speed for the Mengoni race that Will won: 26.5 mph. That is very fast indeed on that CP course with that Harlem hill in the middle, trust me. I certainly hope everyone stayed out of the Jogger's Lane this time. You NYC racing JUNKIES.

Sweet, way to beat the guy who was not doing his share of the work. I know that's racing but I am glad you beat him in the end. Awesome video too!

Not for nuthin', but shouldn't you have already gotten an automatic upgrade from your local rep? 280% is 180% more than needed and 80% more than allowed. Glad you had fun using 52' power destroy the little people, now it's time to play those skills with the boys your size. You obviously will do just fine. Good job on the race, by the way. Nice of those ladies to get the hell out of the way during the sprint. Hmmm...

I am surprised that no one mentioned the little "easter egg" I put in there for the bikeforums crowd! I won't tell what it is yet, but SOMEONE should be able to spot it.

I'm wondering why district reps seem to bust balls on upgrades, but then allow guys who should have been upgraded some time ago to happily sandbag the lower Cats forever. It must be that bike racing isn't hard enough, so it may be their way of making it more challenging.

Go figure. Somehow I suspect that a guy who can TT @ 28mph will fit right in with the 2's. Some day.

Can you really blame this Jerry guy? He dosed his effort perfectly, doing the absolute minimum to hold the pack off at the line but a Cat2, err, another guy from the break beat him in the sprint. OTOH, I'm not especially fond of behavior like that, and I don't even race. So hey, nice win!

But of course. Let's not forget, this is cycling, and the recriminations never cease.

And yet I admire his riding nonetheless. He combines considerable snot with admirable wheel sucking acumen to acheive outstanding racing results. THAT my little weenies, is bike racing. Your understanding of Jerry might be more complete when you learn that in his professional life, he is a Toyota salesman : ). Actually, you'd all like him, he's a very nice guy, and he certainly knows what he's doing on a racing bike.

Hmmm ... I think I have Dieter's email addy around here somewhere ... rummage, rummage. A HAH!! Found it! Now, we've got a couple of options here. You can either hand over some of them there watts you're hoarding, or I hit the "send" button and your days as a 3 are over.

What'll it be?

Hi DrWJ,

Great race report and video. Glad to see that someone who rides aggressively can still win. Good move in a bit of a dicey situation; catching the women during your sprint.

The street lights bring back memories of the 1970s when I would get my dad to drive my to NYC from LI to do the junior race at o'dark hundred. At least it was easy to find parking at that hour.
