what exactly is a crit?

i see it mentioned a lot, i'm wondering how the race works?

Crit is short for criterium, a mass start mulitple-lap road race on a short, closed course with lots of turns. They are great races for urban settings. Typically the race runs for a set time plus a number of laps. There are often intermediary sprints for bonuses called primes, (pronounced preems). Racers who are lapped, or fall too far behind, are pulled from the race. A racer who suffers a crash or a flat can rejoin the race one lap later during the first, timed, portion of the race.
