Victoria Cycling Festival
I bought a road bike in April of this year. I've done a few track races, and a few practice crits, but this was my first real crit.
Friday was the Bear Mountain Hill Climb. I was a 3 km climb, with varying steepness and even a little downhill section. I did it in 10:34, which got me 46th of 65 in the men. The winning time was 7:47.
Saturday was the Oak Bay Cops for Cancer Crit. About 40 Cat4 & 5 racers lined up. It was a flat 5 corner crit with nice wide corners. I was doing all right, I was towards the back half of the group on the outside. Each corner I'd move up a few places, and then the next corner I might lose them again. Then after about 15 minutes, I just couldn't corner anymore, and I lost the pack. I realized I had a slow leak so I pulled into the pits, got a new wheel, and got sent back out into the pack. Much better, I moved up into about a 1/3rd of the way down the pack on the outside again. Hung there again for a while and then started slipping back again. With 5 laps to go I tried to move forward again, made a few places and then finished somewhere around 20 - 25th. There was no finish line camera, so only top five were posted. I'm guessing my position based on photos my wife took.
Sunday was the Bastion Square Crit. A crit in the city with sharper corners and a decent elevation change per lap. I started warming up and was feeling good with the corners. With about 10 minutes left in warmup, it started raining. Two people crashed in the warmup when they hit the cross walk paint. There were 25 of us in Cat 5. The race started of and I had a good position in about 7th. We took the first two laps fairly slow in the corners, and then the two leaders started pulling away. I picked up my pace, a little too much, crashed in the corner at the bottom of the hill. My front tire on the sidewalk paint slipped out from under me and I went down. I think the guy behind me hit me, but everybody else made it through. I went to the pits, got my free lap and rejoin. At the next corner, the guy in front of me crashed, and I went into the railing trying to avoid him. I lost a few places, the pack was already strung out by this point. I got back in the race, I made up a few places, but I was really hurting, and then the places slowly started slipping away. I ended up finish 9th. Last of the finishers, the other 16 either dropped out or crashed out. I don't think people were getting pulled.
I had a good time, I'm sore, but looking forward to next year, and hoping it doesn't rain. I need to learn cornering in the rain. The other categories weren't much better, lots of crashing.
And now for some pictures:
And something I'd never seen before: In the cat 5 race, a guys crank falls off. So he is pedaling with one foot until he reaches the support area. The crank arm is hang from his foot so he can't put his foot down. The support guys catch him, put his crank back on, and send him on his way.
Hey man...I was the guy in the white jersey at the Bastion Square Crit (I started next to you). I rode with you for a bit...sorry I couldn't pull you better...I was having some major traction issues (that and i'm fat and slow ;-)).
It was nice to see you finish. I bailed around lap 10 (I think) and called it a day...it was pretty ridiculous. Fun though :-)
