World Championships: The Stupid Questions

Post 'em here, nothing important:

Why don't the various national champions wear their championship jerseys at Worlds?

Did most of the DNFs retire en masse or was it mostly a few at a time? (I only caught the last three laps)

How long does it take to put up mile after mile of barriers?

how do I explain to my part-time cycling friends how someone can be World Champion for a whole year after only a few hours racing?

I think that is because no one cares about the white ProTour jersey.

1) Because the whole national team must look the same

2) No. Individuals and very small groups usually get popped or retire when they are too far OTB when they come by the team tents at the feed zone. It is a race of attrition, so guys are coming out almost every lap.

3) Depends on the city, but usually an entire day.

Football, soccer, rugby all come down to one game, what's the difference?

Thanks. Is this just tradition? Obviously, the teams should be mostly the same, but I'm thinking of the pro tour, where the various national champs don't look anything like their 'ordinary' teammates. Since this is the only race where nationality really matters, I'd think they'd play it up more.

(I'm not trying to change anything, or criticize -- they can do whatever they want -- just genuinely curious.)

one would assume that things would get confusing if the russian, serbian, french, and dutch champ showed up in their nat champ jerseys...

Maybe if the French wouldn't wear their flag sideways...

Because this is the one race of the year, really, where all the guys on a NATIONAL TEAM are (supposed to be) working together to get someone on their team the win. All of them are equals working for a goal.

And surprisingly, the Italians managed to set their various egos aside and do just that this year.

If you take a close look at racers' uniforms in pictures, there aren't even any national or world champ stripes on their collars or sleeves.

When Frankie Andreu pulled out of the 1993 Worlds, he stopped at the big screen TV on the top of the climb and watched Lance finish it off. Then he rode to the finish.

He was "whereing" his national team kit just because. That's how it's done at Worlds and Olympics.

Believe me: it takes more than just one day to "throw fence" for an event of that size. They'll start a week before by placing it in the road right-of-way. Then a crew will set up everything but the intersections. They'll shut down the intersections usually on the night before.
The city loves it. I can assure you that every commuter sings happy songs about it all week long, and counts the days until a major road race returns to their fair city.

it may take a week to set up, but in stuttgart it only takes one strong gust of wind to take it down.

I didn't pay super close attention, but every time I looked up, there was fencing. For, what, 20km?

3 meters at a time, that's gonna' take some work.
