First DNF of the season
Torrance Crit 4/20/08, Cat 4, I had a good warm up and felt pretty good. I've been doing intervals now and am feeling stronger. I had to shave some liquid weight before the start and ended up lining up in the back. With 4 not-so-smooth corners on a 0.4 mile course, I just couldn't move up in the 80+ person field and the accordion wore me out. I'm a little disappointed as I was going for no DNFs this year, but that's life.
I sat on the grass with a teammate's girlfriend to watch the rest of the race. Another teammate, Mark, won a prime (Sports Splash fragrance) before sitting up to take a more sheltered position with 10 minutes to go. Going into the final lap, Jeff was in a great position in the top 10 and was moving up. We didn't see him go through the finish line and got word that someone went down in front of him in turn 1, taking him and others down with him. Other riders recall hearing 3 or 4 seperate crash sounds and blown tires. I guess I should be glad I wasn't still in the field at that point. My neighbor, Kevin, ended up taking 3rd and was glad to hear I wasn't in the wreckage behind him.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that in the commotion of my teammate going down, I forgot my wheels in the wheel pit. Another teammate did as well, so I don't feel like a complete moron... well I still do, but at least like I'm not the only one. Now we're trying to get in contact with the promoters to try and recover our wheels.
