If you could improve your cycling performance this much, you'd have something

Intel Mac running Adobe Illustrator CS 3 vs. G5 PowerMac running Illustrator CS2 Pcad test:

The identical 2.5mb Illustrator file, Select All, Rotate/Copy:

G5 PowerMac with CS2: 185 seconds

Intel Mac with CS 3 upgrade: 33 seconds

That's like Floyd cheating by using a one liter sport motorcycle. The most dramatic performance improvement I've ever witnessed going from one machine to the next generation, and I've been updating hardware/software for 16 years. I like it.

Sure it's foo, but what isn't?

Yeah, Adobe got to take advantage of a lot of Intel optimizations (that were already in place for the PC) when the Mac went Intel.

Don't underestimate the impact of the move to CS3...

Pirating software isn't particularly possible these days. You need a hacker friend. Pcad is a computer idiot. Which segways nicely with his bicycle imbecilia.

I don't understand the 'don't underestimate CS3' comment above. My original post highlights the mojo of CS3. Illustrator on Leopard on an Intel box is smokin'. As well it should be. I'm typing this on a dual 2Ghz G5 tower. As soon as Apple upgrades the towers I'm there. I'll probably get my main drafting dude his new iMac before the end of the year. Those are the last two non-Intel machines here. Then we'll be all Leopard/Intel/CS3 (Pshop and Illustrator).

It ain't cheap. Neither are Zipps (desparate attempt to link this to cycling).

You are all pathetic amateur bicycle racing paupers. I may be slow on a bicycle, but at least I'm not begging for pirated software on BF. Stop riding so much and focus on your careers. I do realize there are those here who first need to get careers. Pcad has structured his life so that career and cycling addiction do not conflict. And that is the most profound secret to Pcad Cycling Zen.

Sadly, cold toes continue to F with the Cycling Zen. Winter Sucks (that can not be overstated). It wasn't so bad this AM, but I sensed another segway into whining, so I jumped. Whenever the NY stations say 'It's 46 in Central Park this morning' it's never warmer than 32 here. It's consistently 10-15 colder on Fall/Winter/Spring mornings. This only really starts becoming problematic in Dec/Jan/Feb. But again, anything worth whining about warrants a post here.

My "don't underestimate" statement was pointed at your crediting the hardware for the performance improvement. Granted, much of it is from hardware, but probably 40% of it is from software, through IPP libraries and version optimizations.

I don't pirate software either

I think you're correct, it's about 50/50 software/hardware, but the net improvement is just astonishing to somebody who has spent 23 years on Macs and 16 years in the graphics Mac trenches. The machine I started my business with was a Mac IIci, and from there I've gone through Quadras and PowerMacs etc. ad nauseum. I've lost count of how many Macs I've owned, but we currently have four (plus my kid's Macbook). I started on Illustrator version 3, and now I think it's version 13. That performance boost is just staggering to me. I figured it would be 2-3x faster. But 600% faster?? Not only on the complex processor intensive move, but in redrawing this file it was like 'One Mississippi' on the Intel/CS3 iMac and 'One..Two...Three..Four..Five Mississipi' on the G5/CS2 tower. And the newer Macs we'll get in here in the next 90 days are faster still, particularly the tower that will sit under my desk.

I want to have one full bore tower in my office just in case we get a file that makes smoke come out of the iMac's ears. And we do occasionally get some of those. I suspect there will be a personal computer on my desk some day that I can't bring to its CPU knees with Illustrator or Pshop one of these days, but it's not here yet. These new Intel machines are a lot closer however. Very impressive. Very few of the projects we work on here will have us tapping out toes waiting for the machines going forward.

As recently as 5-8 years ago some of the processor intensive graphics moves that an Intel box with CS3 can accomplish in under 5 minutes would simply have crashed an older Mac. I've done it enough times to know. I've never sat down and figured out how much faster a state of the art current system is than my original IIci, but my guess is 1000x faster in some circumstances. And that is not hyperbole or exaggeration. I think that's accurate (or possibly an understatement). Back in 1991 the hard drives were 80 MEGabytes, not 500 GIGabytes. Obviously this same comparison applies to the Windows side. PCs just keep getting better. The machines I'm on now are so much better in every way than what I had 5+ years ago it's amazing.

Technology ROCKS. Right up until it kills you, then it sucks.

guilty. one hundred bucks is a lot of money at the moment, so i'll use the free stuff until my career does get on track. i've sold all but two bikes to make rent, so cyclingpeaks is a future luxury at the moment. and i'll look forward to the first edition of Pcad Cycling Zen when it comes to print.

edit - and as to the mac stuff, i've used macs exclusively my entire life (Apple II and up) and was lucky enough to work for apple for a couple years, so i'm inherently biased

Pcad get a new Mac Pro; 8 core processing, 16 GB of ram, and a TB of storage.

Forget Zipps, that thing is a brand new car.

8 core is too pricey and is processing overkill for our needs. Plus Apple is on the verge of a new batch of towers. No later than MacWorld in January, hopefully sooner.

Meh. I just got a new laptop with CADD (well, it's in the mail) and GIS suites.

With your address, I could predict how you get to any local store, if and when a flood will sweep your riverside shanty away, determine where you should buy said shanty should you choose to relocate, and all sorts of other cool and trivial crap.

My job, FTW.

We are not in flood danger here. My deck is sliding down the shale cliff into the valley below however. At least it's happening very slowly. And that my little weenies, is a $50K cluster ****. But it will have to wait until after Pcadette graduates at the top of her class from NYU.

In summary, while I own a perfectly lovely house that may eventually fail to obtain a town C of O because of deck with bad footings, but I'll have awesome views when I tell the local building inspector to go F himself. Again, nothing $50K won't fix. Give that Apple stock another 18 months and we'll review this matter again.

Windows. DocRay will paint an American flag on his ass and streak the Canadian Parliament before I go over to the Dark Side.

P.S. The 17% grades that I climb every day to get back to my driveway for those killer view are wrecking my right knee. I'm buying a keg of Glucosomine/Chondroitin tabs next week.
