PowerTap Ethics Question

Back in December, I ordered a PT SL built into some aero wheels. Surprised that it took so long for them to come (I had to politely ask why I hadn't heard about when they were shipping). At any rate, they came today and they look really nice. I noticed, however, that the hub says 2.4 on it when I ordered the SL. Do you make the builder aware of the mistake or just keep them and count your lucky blessing?

Is it not the PT 2.4 SL?

I thought the diff. between the PT SL and PT 2.4 was only whether it transmitted with a wired or wireless system, that the hubs were otherwise the same, and given the transmission differences, one would not work with the other.

If this is true (and it's off the top of my head so might be incorrect), then if your hub works with your PT system, you got the right one.

If I'm wrong, and you got a different system than what you ordered, why wouldnt you call the wheel builder and discuss it? If he/she sent you a PT Pro, would you be asking this question on the forums?

My hubs say SL.

Anyway, I would let the company know.

Yeah, SL has AL axle and FHB.

2.4 adds wireless.

2.4 also refers to the coded HR strap (2.4 GHz). So you can have a 2.4 wired PT, i.e. a wired PT with a coded HR strap (I did). This was an older designation though.

All powertaps are coded HR now I think.

I received the 2.4 SL wireless when I had ordered (or at least thought I ordered) the regular SL. I kept my mouth shut and just used the wheel as if it were my own I'm going to hell.

Yes, it is my first Powermeter. Mine says 2.4 on the hub, not SL, which I'm fairly certain means I got the wireless version. It did not come with a shark fin or any wire to run from a fin to the head unit.

I did end up sending an email to the Company telling them there was this error that I ordered the less expensive wired version and before I go to the LBS and have it taped up, that I wanted them to tell me how they wanted to handle. I heard nothing, in the two days since I sent it. Wondering how long I wait. May follow up with a phone call. If a problem arises and I need them to take care of it, don't want them to claim this is not the one I bought from them since the records say I bought SL.

Have the problems with the 2.4 been worked out, I assume there are people who actually made an intentional decision to buy the SL over the 2.4 SL?

All right. I cannot hold it in any longer, these are Hed Jet 60s and I really want to put them on the bike. I have a conscience and believe in karma however.

If you sent than an e-mail and they have not responded in two days it has now become a "them" problem. If I were guessing I would say they were out of stock on the SL and finally just built your wheel with the 2.4. I think you did the right thing in contacting them, but at this point you have done your part. You have wasted enough valuable training days on this deal.

I'm starting to lean that way too, unless you have a phone # you can call. We all know how the popular wheelbuilders respond to email...

I would've sent them an e-mail telling them if they wanted to overnight a replacement, I wouldn't train on it for two days, but you'd been waiting two months already and were at the end of your patience.

It's been three business days and no word from them. So, that's it. I tried. Off to get it taped up tomorrow and off I go. First, I guess I go buy Andrew Coggan's book.

Yes, highly recommended. Then, get Trainingpeaks WKO+ software to make sense of all the data.

Yes, as far as I can tell, all the wireless PTs now work flawlessly. I've had no dropped data or any problems whatsoever. I bought the first gen one(did have data drops) and had it replaced a couple months back. I'm surprised you can't get in touch with them, I had great customer service.

Was trying not to name them, did not want to unnecessarily affect the reptutation. I could have called, I guess, but I work alot, and it's impossible to find the time during the day. I sent my email the night I opened them, so I guess I assume they don't have an issue with it. Maybe it wasn't supposed to take more than a month for the wheels to be built and they upgraded me to wireless?

I am going to love the wheels, I did a fair amount of research there before making the purchase decision. Compared to my Fulcrum Racing 1s (which I like), I cannot believe how light these are. I'm sure there will be some adjustment riding 60mm dish in the wind on the Golden Gate on the way home, little nervous about that, but I'll deal.

Thanks for all the advice. I feel like I did the right thing in attempting to tell them (all my communication with them during the purchase and wait period was by email).

You did your part. Hell, I rode my PT the same day I got it, which was ~4 days after I had paid for it.

Are HR monitor dropouts on a PT typically a weak heart strap battery issue?
