I've got IBM

Irritable Biker Syndrome or maybe BFM (Bad F'in Mood).

Everything is pissing me off and nothing - in my mind - is going smoothly or will go smoothly. I think I need a couple of days to rest and get over this thing before you see me on a clock tower.

This sux.

bdcheung 03-11-08 07:43 AM

I think you need to ride a fixie. Seriously.

Have you been hanging out with botto?

I can get my hands on one, I think. But the guy that has it ran me into the ground yesterday with my racing .

I know. This is the second time I have felt this way. The first was when I was doing 2 + 85 mile rides a week. By the end I wanted to tear myself apart.

Two days. Relax. No hard training. Walk with family. Play with dog. Eat some ice cream.

if you're racing on saturdays and sundays, then the riding you do during the week shouldn't be anything more than recovery and tempo.

waterrockets 03-11-08 07:51 AM

Too bad you need recovery. Sprints would be perfect for curing your mood.

Don't go do sprints.

Ever wish there was a place you could just pay a small fee and throw baseballs through some glass for 5 minutes?

Actually, now that you mention baseball, I find the batting cage to be really good stress relief. Or the range.

Yes. Or bricks.

transplant 03-11-08 07:59 AM

you need a livejournal, not a thread on bikeforums

(disclaimer: just so no one gets their panties in a bunch, this is a joke, not a personal attack, stab, etc.)

This has ended for a bit. I have a race on Saturday and then two weeks off. I should have STFD (settled the f down) but I'm immature thinking that I can train hard all the freaking time.

substructure 03-11-08 08:03 AM

And I'm real sorry if I've been moody here guys (and gals). I've been a real baby, I know.

bdcheung 03-11-08 08:05 AM

Htfu.

+1

This is the biggest mistake I see with new racers. (and myself)

That was me 2 weeks ago. Did intervals on Mon, Tue and Thur, then raced on Sunday. I'm still paying for it. It felt good at the time, but I should have known better.

patentcad 03-11-08 09:01 AM

Subby, you're like a younger, whinier version of me. The younger part I can see, but more whiney?

Kudos.

Marrock 03-11-08 09:04 AM

On days like that I used to go into the woods with an axe and find some deadfall trees.

A good half hour or so flailing away with the axe and the universe was set to rights once again.

wfrogge 03-11-08 09:14 AM

I used to play golf to a 5 handicap so on days like that I hit the driving range and try to knock the cover off of 100 or so balls.... Aiming at the ball pickup truck is fun too :)

Sub, if you've ever talked to a sports psychologist, they'll tell you that this was predictable. Here, let me put on my armchair psychologist's hat (everybody's an expert on the internet, right?).

You just had a few weeks where you didn't just meet your expectations, you blew them out of the water. That's awesome, and all credit goes to you and so on. OK, but that's past now. Now you find yourself in a situation where your expectations for yourself just took a huge jump upward. All the hard work you put in the last few weeks or months is now the new normal.

The raised expectations can take the fun out of racing for a while. So try and bring it back. Ride a fixie or a rigid singlespeed mtb or whatever works for you. Remember the stupid fun of heading out to your first few fast group rides. Blast whatever dumb music you listened to in highschool from your car's speakers on the way to your next race (we *all* listened to dumb music in highschool). Re-read Snuffy's "I wanna be like Jens" post. Whatever works for you.

I'll PM you my bill. Next Tuesday at 11 good for you?

Sure, jump to psychological factors before checking for a biochemical basis... ;)

n days like that I used to go into the woods with an axe and find some deadfall trees.

A good half hour or so flailing away with the axe and the universe was set to rights once again.
Half a cord of firewood could get me through most bike-related frustrations.
For the women-related issues it was usually a full cord.

Best meditation/anger relief ever

I'm in the same boat. With a much shorter reach, though.

better days will come--I mean, every day can't totally suck, right?
