In Awe

I have to live through my teammates, most of whom (well, probably all) are much better than myself. But none more so that the guy who started the team (or at least the road faction of it). He won a mountain bike race on sunday in the expert class after breaking a chain and taking 12 minutes to fix it. Yesterday at the local low-key 10 mile TT he bested his PR (which was also the course record) by 20 seconds.

There seemed to be a pretty good headwind going out the first leg and I hit it hard all the way to the Glen Annie turnaround. I knew that I was having a “pb” run at that pace (turnaround at 10:16) and had been averaging a high-for-me wattage of 359W up until that point. I tried to continue to put the power down through the descents and corners and finished in 21:28 with an average power of 340W and speed of 27.8mph. My best run was last July in 21:48 at 329W and 27.2mph.
My time was 26:44. I'm not worthy.

what's he weigh? Because watts are almost meaningless without a bodyweight to attach it to.

There are people, regardless of where you are, that can put out 5.3w/kg for ~20min.

4 or 5 on my team, in race shape.

Yeah that wattage is nice for 140 pounder!

Really makes me glad that I'm a sprinter because I know I'm never going to get my 20 min power to be 5.3 w/kg especially here at altitude. 21.5 w/kg for 5s power is no problem though. I can just point to the sprinter profile!

watts/kg has much less to do with a flat TT then watts/cda. Uphill is a different story.

He goes fast in TTs, climbs very well, can win field sprints, and bunny-hops cx barriers. And as UMD can attest, he just ripped our legs off in our Tuesday lunchtime suffer-fest. He's the real deal.

It's like a guy on our team. From Cat 5 to Cat 1 in 17 months to racing with Abercrombie Racing in 24 months. Takes a few months off the bike, and still comes out in better shape than anyone else. Makes me sick.

Glad to have him back on the team though.

Oh no questioning his skills or power. Just a comment on TT's are more about being slippery that high w/kg. I'm sure he has invested time in his TT position as well.

I'm probably just shy of 5.3 W/kg for 20 min here at altitude. Maybe if I tapered and was really motivated I could do it. Or just wait a few weeks. It's not really pro W/kg but borderline. I don't even train that hard so I wouldn't be surprised if there were a number of folks above 5 W/kg.

If I was younger and could eek out 5-10% more then I'd consider being a pro.

very cool. It's great to ride with talent like that as it quickly lets you know your place and emphasizes the importance of strategy in this sport.
