Uhmm yeah, this clears up everything for me.

It's nice to see that they aren't leaving due to problems (aka drugs).

Good point. I guess I should have said it's nice to see that they are leaving and not giving cycling even more bad press by saying it is due to drugs.

Any better?

Makes no difference whatsoever with the current no-relegation franchise system in place. Someone will buy their "pro license", and the jolly bunch will be racing next season as "team whatever", otherwise unchanged.

You are saying this like it is a bad thing. Would you rather another sponsor did not pick them up and Pro Cycling could be out another Pro team?

There's the protour, which is hardly a working model but has several tiers, points and an eventual winner at the end, and then there is... the protour, where the top division will remain the same even if a team folds (only to emerge under a new name), and conti teams have no chance of promoting (based on results), and have to rely on wildcards and spells of luck to get starts in noticeable events.

To be honest, I'd rather they made up their mind as to what they want pro cycling to be. Pro sports work are either division-based with promotions and relegations, or the US-style franchises. Pro cycling is neither. And it doesn't seem to work too well at the moment.

This is what I don't particularly like about cycling. Why aren't there permanent teams? It's an irrational thing, I know. But if, say AIG stops sponsoring Man United they won't turn into a Carlsberg Rovers, and who sponsors, say, the Toronto Maple Leafs - I've no idea.

its the same as football really. Riis Cycling isnt changing just the sponsor just like when vodophone or whoever left and aig took over.

Also, a football team could theoretically fold if they lost sponsorship and werent making money. The difference is the football teams dont neccesarily need the sponsorship money where as cycling does.

The difference for the casual fan is that ManUre isn't called "AIG FC", so when the sponsor changes, the club name doesn't. I like F1's model of naming teams, such as Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. You get the sponsor name in, the team name stays in, and it's easier to follow in the long run.

Our team is CSC (Charlotte Sports Cycling). But hey, I tell people that's who I ride for.

The regular Joe Schmoe doesn't know the difference anyway.
