'Toona = Crit; What else is there?
Not sure if anyone else saw this on Cyclingnews yesterday, but it seems like 'Toona is having some troubles this year with sponsorship and organization. Which is a shame, because it was a marvelous race, from what I hear.
The Cat2 points race at Toona was going to be one of my A races this year; it will obviously be taken off the docket now.
So, what other sorts of climbing-oriented races are available in VA/NC/PA/TN/WV/KY in late July? I wanted to do Toona specifically for the long RR/climbing stage, and wouldn't mind trying my hand at a stage race, but a single day race would be preferred.

And by postal, I don't mean the defunct ProTour team.

Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (Evanston, IL), Ray Basso (Bensenville, IL), Carl Zach (Waukesha, WI), and the must-do race: Columbia St. Mary's Great Downer Avenue Criterium (Milwaukee). I didn't do Downer Ave this past year, because they had an alternate race for everyone but the P/1/2 men, but from what I hear, the course, location and atmosphere are amazing.
They've made the blunder of eliminating the Alpine Valley RR for this year's races, which I think is pretty poor on their part. In my opinion the hardest race in the Midwest, if people choose to make it that way.

I hope they still have a race up in Green Bay again this year. It looks like there's a race in fond du lac which is nice and close too. It's cool that everybody gets to race downer's this year. God I'm pumped.

You might look into the FBCC Omnium in Asheville, although from what I understand despite the fact it's in the mountains, the RR isn't that hard. We also have the Crossroads Classic in the last week of July. I can't tell you first hand about them though, as those events conflict with RAGBRAI, my ride 500 miles, screw off, drink and eat pie week of the year.

I just read about toona only being a crit this year. That really sucks as it's a great event that is really supported by the community, and brings alot of $$ into an area that needs it.

French Broad's RR doesn't have the kind of climbing that it should given where it's held, but there is some up and down in each lap.

That website is pretty bad, BTW. None of the races have any information besides the date. No race flyer, course description, prize list, times...
