Summer Solstice

Our team was devastaed by the No Tour de Toona this year. We were looking around for another stage race not too far away (Jamestown NY) and I dug up this race in Ohio:

Looks promising on paper, but one of our affiliated coaches had done it a couple of years ago and said it was very poorly run. Anyone done this lately or have any thoughts.

Thanks!

Besides the 2006 race, which was tragic beyond words, I've only heard relatively good things about the race. I don't know anyone who's done the entire thing, but I do know plenty of guys who have cherrypicked a few of the stages and had a good time.

The flyer says it "isn't a stage race, but GC is awarded" so it may not work if you're looking for 3-2 or 2-1 stage race upgrade points.

It's not a terrible race, but not jaw droppingly good either. The 06 edition was plagued with bad luck. Crash after tragic crash, late start times, bad courses. They've changed it up, so it's a basically 3 road races and a TT. I'm planning on doing it, but I also live 45 minutes from the venue.

Probably 3 field sprints though as there aren't any hills to speak of down there.

I did 3 of the 4 cat 3 stages last year. It was alright. Organization was fine last year. Payouts were a little slow (like an hour and a half after the race) for those of us who needed to drive home, but otherwise no complaints about how it was run.

The GC is weird -- it's time based, but all the road stages are flat, meaning a pack finish is likely. So the GC is basically just the TT standings. I heard that the last stage, held after the TT, was fairly active with a break getting away, but that was the stage I missed.

We had 70+ person fields in the cat 3s. Mostly Ohio and Pennsylvania racers it seemed.

Worth doing, but no a Tour de Toona.

My only complaint is the flat RR's. Stage 2 has short rollers, 1 and 4 are PANCAKE flat cornfields. Very windy. Small time bonuses for top 3 in ea. stage & KOM time bonus for a climb on stage 2. Doing all 4 stages I'd put money on best TT (stage 3) time to win it all in most cats. Yellow line is enforced and is monitored closely.
edit: first 3 stages are all close in proximity to Wilmington. The 4th stage however had to of been 30 miles away.

Prepare to race in the dark on Friday.

I'm not doing this race this year.
