A nice surprise
Went out for a ride today on one of my favorite training routes around here to find that they're repaving a major section of it! About 25% of the stretch of road has been repaved, with equipment in place to continue the work Monday. There's nothing like fresh asphalt under your wheels...

Those would be nice surprises... I could certainly turn a profit selling one, but probably not the other.

and since I am no fool (or at least less of one than I was a year ago), I'm pocketing my money for a wiser investment. Like my 401(k).

Making a kilometer blurry
Speaking of new pavement, yesterday I rode Jester, and coming down the back side, there's a 50mph descent that I usually bomb w/out brakes. Halfway down, there's a "Caution: Loose Gravel" sign. Turns out that was an understatement. I had gotten back down to 40 or so by the time I figured out what was ahead: freshly spread chipseal. Essentially 2" of pea gravel. On a descent. In a turn.
I was sliding out into oncoming lane a bit, but wrangled it back where I needed to be, and was finally able to use some brakes.
Nearly had some new stains for the white race kit there.

What, exactly, is chipseal?

Chipseal is that stuff that they usually patch holes in the road with. Looks like asphalt with gravel in it and it really rough to ride on it. When the patches are first laid, they arent swept so there is a lot of loose gravel laying around the patch and its basically like riding on gravel. Bike can slide out from under you when you are going straight. Not a fun experience.
Around here, there are a lot of roads that are completely chipseal.

Making a kilometer blurry
Yeah, I was with three others, and we were all surprised to have stayed up. They all watched me sail about 50m ahead of them before we hit the rocks, and I didn't know if they were going to come out the other side. I was in no position to point anything out as I had to grab two handfuls of brakes before the new portions O_o.
Unfun.
