Unfortunately there's not a lot of information on your current aerodynamics to wager a realistic guess. Even a simple change like going from a shallow rim to a 58mm carbon, or on top of the hoods looking like a sail to riding in aerobars with a flat back can make a ~2-5 minute difference over that distance.

Thanks, kensuf. Believe it or not, what you said helps me a lot. If I can pick up even one minute a mile, that would be enough to be quite competitive. For my age group, riding my road bike, on the hoods pretty much all the time, no aero bars ... I GPS timed myself at 10 minutes above the top times ridden last year. Even 20 or 30 seconds faster a mile would be enough to win the age class. You've given me enough encouragement for me to do some training for next year. My TT bike should arrive in a week or so, but too late for this year's ITT run which is this coming Saturday. When I get my bike, I'll get a fit, and ride the course again ... this time at about the same time of day so the wind would be pretty much the same. Then we'll see just how competitive I really am. If I am, then I'll invest in a body suit, shoe covers, and a aero helmet.

Do gloves make a difference? I normally wear those old school crochet gloves. Just have always used them and like the knitting on the back because they make a nice "forehead wipe rag". Getting more difficult to fine, so I stocked up last time I found some. They aren't very aero however.

Uhh, 1 minute a mile can be anywhere from 10-30 mph.

Shows you how little I know about TT. I've been riding my whole life, since the 60's, but don't have a clue about TT competition or how fast, (or slow) I can go compared to my peers. "If" I get my new TT bike; well, more accurately, "if I accept delivery", then I'll re-ride the course. Got notification that they shipped the bike last night, but instead of full Rival, they put on an Apex crank. Not too happy about that. Waiting to hear back from them. If I don't, I just might refuse to accept the delivery and tell UPS to return the thing; and call my credit card company.

Thanks again for being willing to help a newby, (at TT).

also remember you will need to get adapted to your tt position so you might be only marginally faster on your tt bike for a couple of weeks.

+1 positional adaptation is the biggest key in my mind.
10-20" per mile would be a huge gain, anything above that is ... wow, I dunno - primarily it depends on your position & gear when you did it the first time.
I'd love to hear how much time you took off upon re-doing the course with your TT bike whenever that happens.

The difference between a Rival crank and an Apex crank is so small as to be negligible in my mind... I run a 105 level crank on my TT bike, and it seems to be just fine... but however.

I got myself a TT bike recently:

It's not finished yet and I still have to put the gear shifters on when they arrive ... so for now it is a single speed TT bike
I had my wife take this picture to help me get a view on my position to help me dial it in.
Did a few testrides already and it is indeed a fact that your body needs to adapt to the new situation. Hope to get comfortable soon

you're position looks pretty good, after about a week or two you'll start to feel comfortable on it.

Will do. If it isn't embarrassing. I should have read this whole thread before my attempt. That "don't start out too fast" thingy... Well, I did. The last 6-mile leg, I just about "died". Thought about just stopping, because after that leg, I'd have to re-ride the 6-mile leg back to the car/start line. I'm going to watch this Saturday when they compete, and you can be sure that I'll be "taking notes". Especially in my age group. I'm kinda getting excited. Silly for an almost 60-year old man to get excited about riding a bicycle. Oh well. Little things for little minds.

The difference between a Rival crank and an Apex crank is so small as to be negligible in my mind...
I wrote them, (Competitive Cyclist), an e-mail this morning. I only told them that they made a swap from what I purchased, that they subsitituted a lower level component, and that I was not informed about it beforehand. I did not ask what they were going to do about it or threaten to return the bike and cancel the sale, just said that I was "unhappy". They telephoned me, apologized profusely, and said that they were going to send me a Force crank and when I get the bike, to swap the cranks and send the Apex back. Very fair solution, more than fair in fact. They are out of stock of the Rival cranks and I said I'd be willing to wait a week or three for them to receive stock. He put me on hold to check and said they couldn't get a delivery date and he would just send the Force crank instead. As far as I'm concerned, I will now not hesitate to recommend Competitive Cyclist to others ... but warn them to check their work orders closely.

Thanks again for the help and advice.

It's never too late ... not even to be a champion (in your age group of course).
My granduncle started running at age 67 ... he had never done anything sportive in his life ... just hard work in the fields.
He was world champion marathon, 10000m, 3000m steeple, half marathon, etc ... for a decade until age 84 or so!
He passed away last week though.

Did 17:50 today on the same course as last week. my legs wasn't really feeling it because i think my warm up was a little too easy at the end (last 10 minutes) so i showed up to the line tired and not ready to go.

Road the same TT course today and went three minutes faster than last week. Wind was a lot more intense today. What was the difference? I read the hints and tips thread and remembered to not start out so fast. Took about three miles before I got up to full speed.

Zabriskie TT pacing

So Zabriskie won the 2011 US TT Championships. After watching the race on TV today I noticed that Zabriskie didnt go with the pacing rule that is being suggested on this forum. They did 3 laps and his splits were something like 13:10, 13:30 and 13:45. Not sure if the first lap was a full lap as they didnt start from the finish line but still, I dont think that he was holding his horses back the first lap

I think a bit of that was psychological, the previous winner was behind him and got to see his first lap split, so absolutely crushing the field on the first lap could have worked in his favor.

Or he just went out too hard and slowed a little each lap *shrug*

The Greenville course is a pacing nightmare. On a typical US TT course, your pacing is determined by wind and elevation gain. Some courses should be positively split while others should be negative. Greenville is 3 laps with a lot of hills and technical turns. The fastest way to ride the course is to go hard on the hills and very hard out of the corners. There are downhill sections where you can recover. I believe the first lap is shorter because the start ramp is in a middle section of the course that is only used on the first lap.

I may be hitting up a 40k TT next weekend. It is relatively small, but is a USAC event. From my understanding - sleeveless skin suits, disc covers, and bottles mounted between the aerobars are all ok, yes?

Any other equipment weirdness I need to know before I hit the line?

Pretty sure you have to have sleeves on your skinsuit. Triathlons allow sleeveless.

The USAC is now allowing sleeveless jerseys and trisuits for individual TTs.

i don't think they will care that much, just email the race advisor and ask him if it's okay to have a sleeveless skin suit and a bottle mounted between the aerobars. the disc cover is fine.

2 questions:

1) My helmet is best aligned wih my back if i wear it slightly pushed back/up on my head. Doesn't look great, but is this likely to be more aero than having it lower/forward and further from my back?

2) I'm tall with long limbs and slightly (comparatively) short torso. In the position I find myself wanting to be in (saddle is where i want it and elbows are a touch forward of being below shoulders) my knees hit my elbows. Any tips?

Assume a 40k, flat course if it matters.

Were you actually fit to the frame? Sounds like it's too small.
