Breathe Right Strips Are Back!
at least judging from the pics in today's time trial. kloden and ulrich have the last laugh. kinda.
anybody use these things anymore? i used them a couple of times 6 or so years ago in track. didn't notice a difference in performance, but it did seem to open up the bottom of my nose. not sure that this improves breathing.
your assignment: discuss breathe right strips and their capacity to improve performance, using thoughtful examples and/or insights. responses are limited to 50 words with smilies and hyperlinks counting towards that total.

So, yeah.
Summary. Breathe right nasal strips have little or no effect on the amount of air that passes through your lungs, or on the amount of oxygen you can extract from the air during exercise. Performance of and recovery from maximal endurance exercise by normal healthy adults under normal laboratory conditions also appears to be unaffected. A study showing that nasal dilation can reduce heating of the brain during exercise needs to be repeated with Breathe Right strips while athletic performance is monitored under various conditions. My recommendation: the strips are silly for most athletes, but they may work when high body temperature reduces performance.

i use them. I have a partially deviated septum (self diagnosed). They seem to make it easier to actually breath through my nose. Normally I cant really breath through my nose at all. The strips give improvement in my perception.
Some suggest that breathing through he nose allows for proper diaphragmatic breathing, which is much more effective than mouth breathing, which is a more shallow, upper lung breath. With out the strip, I can breath 50% through my nostrils (on the best of days). I'd guess that the strip makes this more like 70-80%.
I only use them when I race, though and dont seem to miss them at all when I dont wear them during training, so who knows... placebo??
I should get surgery, but I dont wanna.

I broke my nose skateboarding when I was 16 and have had breathing problems through my nose ever since. I tried the breathe rights, and although they work, they kept coming off my nose for some reason. The only time on the bike when my nose really bothers me is when I try to eat anything. I'm a total mouth breather and when I shove in a clif bar or whatnot, I'm gasping.

Yeah, who breathes in through their nose when they race? My nose just doesn't get enough air into my system to function at high performance. Even when I'm just cruising, I'm probably mouth breathing out of sheer habit. It might have something to do with the fact that I produce plenty of mucus (mmmm...) when I exercise. Maybe I have low-level indoor allergies most of the time (actually, I almost certainly do) that cause my nasal passages to be more-or-less constantly constricted. Sometimes nose breathing feels barely sufficient when I'm just hanging around, not exercising or anything. Anyway, I don't think that Breathe Right strips would help much.

In response to grolby, I always use astelin before I race or do a harder group ride. It always helps me open up my passages and keep the mucus down for when I'm riding. When I'm training, I don't bother.
