arm warmers in summer?
are there any bike clothing companies that make a summertime-weight sleave to protect against the sun, possibly made out of coolmax or something? essentially a white, thin, UV blocking set of 'arm warmers'.
a three hour race that goes off at 11am is a sure fire way to burn yourself and something like this would be a great alternative to goopy sunscreen.
anybody?

You could always use the under armor stuff. They make hot weather long sleeve shirts.
You can always use one of those and get the sun block as well wicking and be a bit cooler.

I've seen them called "arm coolers". Since learning the term, I've seen lots of different companies with them.

sleazy, get the spray-on sports specific sun screen, put it on an hour before the race and you'll barely notice it

after having some precancerous moles dug out with an ice cream scoop- and being schooled on the sun-
even with 50+ sunscreen on- three hours at the height of sun is just too much for anybody.
i'll be ordering a pair today. thanks.
incidentally, my doc told me that just ONE peeling sunburn in your life is enough to set yourself for a higher chance of skin cancer. and before any of you write that off as "skin cancer is just a mole you get frozen off..."
think again.
skin cancer is an insidious thing- starting with an errant mole and spreading to anywhere in your body. not to be taken lightly.

the two most common forms of skin cancer generally do not spread through the body and are curable (well, removable).

Thirty-five year old co-worker (and cyclist) is undergoing chemo right now for skin-cancer caused liver cancer. They probably would've never caught it if he didn't get chest x-rays for pneumonia. As-is, it's still touch-and-go.

so these arm coolers, how do they compare on SPF?
for example, with Texas riding in regular jerseys and bibs, I get medium-brown shoulders and a tan line where my bib straps are.

on the DeSoto website, under the SKINCOOLER stuff- which i'm assuming the arm coolers are made of the same material...
it says- "blocks 75% of UVB rays"
what are your current jerseys made of? i'm in SW Florida (same lattitude) and never get sun thru my team kit. its made by Pactimo

I might pick-up a set. Imagine them soaked with water. You could radiate a good deal of heat without getting a chill. As the the 75% UVB blockage, that's about what a good UPF 15 lotion does, however it's constant and won't degrade. Still, for long days, take note from the DeSoto website:
These sleeves block 75% of UVB rays, which is about as much as any bike jersey you may wear. We recommend you wear sunscreen underneath

This thread has got me thinking that I need to apply sunscreen to my arms every time I ride. I enjoy wearing a sleeveless jersey and tanning my arms. But it's certainly not worth getting skin cancer just to have nice tan arms.

I like the arm coolers. At the moment, I typically just load up my arms with sunscreen [which works decently], but it does tend to wear off after an hour or so.
Cloth/material only blocks part of the sun rays [perhaps most in this case], so a bit of sunscreen underneath would be helpful.
I also use lotion on my skin [in addition to sunscreen] because I think it helps to retain cooler temperatures as well.

just use heavy duty sunscreen...besides, we need sun and vitamin d...if you cover up too much you don't get any sun at all!

skin cancer is no joke - my younger brother had a melanoma pulled off his back. They caught it in time but it spooked the h3ll out of him.
I try to remember to put sunscreen on before every ride. I've forgotten every now and again though.
Reminds me that I'm over due to have my moles checked actually.

I have the arm coolers. They aren't that cool. Unless you can douse them in water every 30 minutes or so.
