This isn't another first race report.

just joshing. it is.

Shreve Challenge.

This was my first REAL race. An actual USCF held event. I woke up tired as a bird, and went to eat a delicious cinnamon crunch bagel from panera before I travelled down 71. Signed up for my 1-day license and then cruised the town waiting for the start. The butterflies were there and I didn't know what to expect. I did have a goal of finishing the race in one piece, and to have fun-my goals were reached and exceeded. The first 2 loops were pretty easy going the pack stuck together, no real incidents.

On the final lap with the big hill climb 2 riders took off the front. I decided to climb a little quicker to see if its worth going to chase them or to stay with the back. Patience wouldn't let me wait and my legs were feeling strong- so I go after them, and we get a 4 man chase trying to catch these guys. In the final 1/2 mile I attacked off of the 4 man chase group to try and catch the other 2 guys- didn't work out. But, I finished in 3rd place out of 32. I was very happy with the results of my first race and had a blast! And now that the butterflies are gone, I want to do some more!

Here's my race report from that race.

Race day in Shreve Ohio. Warming up felt 10x better then during my race weekend 2 weeks ago, when I was racing with a virus. The course was 9 miles long, with 5-600 feet of climbing each lap with about 300 feet of climbing occurring in the first 2 miles. Many of the roads were fresh chipseal which mean alot of loose rocks, including some descents where i was hitting 43mph. Kinda scary decents.

At the line, the field was pretty small, under 20 riders in the fours. We started at the base of a pretty long climb, and finished at the top, so we had to climb it 5 times in 4 laps Not really knowing the course, I was really aggressive on the first lap, doing most of the pulling and pace setting, as well as trying to get a break going. Although I felt good, my average heart rate was around 175-185bpm. On the second lap, someone attacks up the first long hill (although not too steep) and then I finally blew up on the second half of the climb were its a steady 10-12% grade for about a 1/4 mile, and dropped off the pace. I join up with another rider, and we take turns pulling. I drop him regularly on th climbs, but he would catch up on the flats. Pretty much our goals were to just finish, as well as a few other riders that we passed along the way. On the final climb I dropped my race companion, and powered up the hill. Turns out I got 6th (although they paid out top 5)

Talking to racers afterwards who had done the race before, they gave me a little advise that on the course, its alot smarter to not try and get breaks going because the entire race was endurance, as many noticed I did way too much work first lap. Veterans of this race said there is rarely big group finishes, and the field just gets spotted real quick, so just sitting in and surviving/pacing yourself is a better strategy for getting a good position. Oh well, now I know.

Thanks for coming out and suffering, i mean enjoying the ride! About 100 riders in total were there. There will be pics as soon as i can figure out how to get them on a site for viewing. Probably a Walmart site. Have to go through them first( all 514 of them....) Will try to get them up in the next three days. Will link off the web site and here. How did you like the beat the promoter competition? When i saw the field of 32 in Cat 5 i thought i was dead. But had my best ever 12th finish. I don't even want to hear about the 3rd place for your first race.... No , really, that was great. You should really rock on the Valley city race in August. Hope every one had fun. Dr. S.

Hey, Dr. S Thanks for putting on a GREAT event! It was really fun, and well organized. Beat the promoter was a fun idea too(especially because i beat the promoter). I do plan on trying the valley city race, as well as the orrville milk race. I plan on attending the Shreve Cycling Challenge next year!

Any idea who was taking the photos near the beginning of town? It was right in a right hand corner.

Actually I liked it. I wish I wouldn't have set the pace so high the first lap because I think I would have done pretty good going head to head with someone in a climb. Its one of my stronger points. The guy in yellow behind me in the first pic teamed up with me the last too laps. I was dropping him every climb, but he cought up fast on the flats. On the final climb, I said thanks for the help, and then powered up the climb.

Asmallsol, You were in my race. You and some other guy passed me after I died. I was the Spin guy on the red Cannondale.
I've been untraining myself from the hills for the last month, so that race killed me. I wish that picture site worked, because there might be some cool pics in there.

Ah yes, I remember you. You looked like you were in pain. When the two of us came up to you, we were hoping you'd hop on, so we could split a little more work, but after like a mile, we looked back, and you were no where to be seen. Were you racing in the 4's? If so, you can kinda blame that on me. I pushed the pace hard on the first lap, and it turns out it was too hard for me.

Yeah, it's not your fault, I was in that break and we were working pretty hard. I just wish that there were more crits in the area.
