Nifty Move

Driving to work takes me through an intersection in which my two-lane road widens out to 5 lanes through the intersection and then narrows back to two lanes on the other side.

Though the intersection is designed so that both lanes can go straight, everyone uses the right lane as a turn lane. No one uses it to go straight.

This a.m. as the traffic light was green, traffic moved slowly for some reason - which makes drivers impatient.

As the light turned yellow, I had to stop. But the guy in front of me bolted into the right lane and drew even with the car in front of him. The light turned red as they're passing beneath it. He then slipped back into the last place in line on the other side.

Classic Miss-and-Out sprint. I hoped for a referee to tell me to pull out so I wouldn't have to go to work.

I wonder how much racing effects peoples driving.

When driving home from a race everything seems so slow, even though I’m speeding; I avoid small potholes; I catch myself drafting (tailgating) large vehicles; when I have to downshift on a hill I think about cadence…

Racing has made me a much calmer driver. I had an old 5 speed Accord when I started racing. I used to whip the car around a little, but after I got the bike I found that I was more mellow behind the wheel. I think it's because I get my kicks when I race and train and don't feel like risking it in the car.

I take the appropriate racing line if I go around a corner when I'm walking...

I pointed at a pothole today while my boss was driving us to a meeting.

My next book is about being a better driver through the eyes of a bike racer. It's meant for the general public.

I tend to drive like I'm still racing on the way home.

My mom freaks out a little when she drives with me "You don't use your brakes"

but I'm used to not having any...
