    Payout breakdown

What percentage of the winnings should the first placed rider get? I helped put on my first race recently and overheard one of the winners say that he thought that the winner's share was on the low side. We were trying to make it so that if you placed in the money you at least got your entry fee back. Understanding that you have to payout one place for every $100 in prize money, how should an $1200 payout for a category be broken out?

80 for 4 through 12 makes no sense. What field is this.

Keep in mind, too, that there are rules prohibiting more than X% going to the the winner.
Reacting is mind candy; it requires no thought. Thinking is tedious.

At some of the NYC races the prize list is the same 1-10. This way people are fighting for prestige and points, not money. Maybe it's 2-10, and winner gets an extra $15. So $50, then $35 each for every remaining place. Since there are some viciously dirty moves pulled in the sprint anyway this helps alleviate the need for some of that stuff.

I much prefer a spread out list since I rarely win races but can place somewhat regularly. At the race I promote I try and keep the prize list wide rather than tall (and narrow).

A ten place $650 list goes like this:
    $145
    $115
    $95
    $85
    $65
    $50
    $30
    $25
    $25
    $15
Entry is $12/14/18 (series pre-reg/daily pre-reg/day of race)

I placed 4th at once race a long time ago. I got $90. The winner got $900, second $500, third $200 or so. I was a bit bummed but since I didn't race for money it was okay - I was happy enough with $90. But I have a feeling that going better much deeper would have been better for the racers in general, i.e. more returning racers. The same Cat 3s always won this race (it was a Cat 3 race) and the race eventually shut down.

$80 is good money depending on entry. $50 entry, not great money. $15 entry, excellent money. It's a nice prize list if the entry was less than $40.

    Yeah, at a 10 deep $500, I won $125 for 1st. CDR's list matches with that, I think.

    +1

Only racers who have promoted races can complain about how a race is organized. Suggestions work ("hey, I noticed there was only one portapottie at the race and the line ended up 30 minutes long. Next year can you have like three of them?", complaints don't ("Yo your portapottie setup sucks and you suck as a promoter"). It's like yelling "pull through" when you're at the back. Go to the front and pull through, don't sit at the back and whine like a baby.

I didn't propose anything because I don't know the rules. How much can go to the winner (%)? Also I think it should depend on the type of race....

BTW He said 1 place for every 100 dollars. that's 12 places, not 10.

Should 12th or 10th get the same as 4. 4 is ALMOST PODIUM! 12th is like the straggler of a sprint finish. If this was a mountain top finish maybe its different. However, I think the idea about creating safer sprint finishes is valid though....

I sorta overreacted I think so I'm sorry.

I actually don't know the rules for prize payout offhand but they're in the permit application papers I think. It tries to avoid the $900/$500/$200-ish/$90 payout from happening. I think the rules apply to certain category races and higher, not to Cat E or D races (since there are no rules on my races).

At races for racers, I think a wide prize list encourages racers who place outside the points but inside the money. It feels good to win something, even if it's not points towards an upgrade, and it encourages racers to return the next year.

The tall/narrow prize lists tend to reward the same people over and over again and leave out the more random 7th-10th+ placers.

Since I'm usually in the 7th-10th region if I place, I like wider prize lists, even if it doesn't differentiate between 4th through 10th place.

One of my peeves is when a cash payout is less than my entry fee (in single day races). As a promoter I prefer pre-reg for convenience, day of race for money, but I base the prize list on pre-reg fees to reward those who commit to the race in advance.

Also, although I want to change this for 2009, I don't get money from my race unless I win it in a race, so it makes no difference to me whether or not someone registers later or earlier. For me it's simply easier day of race if people pre-reg.
