Maybe I shouldn't bring this up, but...
Does anyone think anything of the idea of Pantani being set up in his 1999 giro expulsion?
Pantani always said that he was set up.
The idea came back to me with a cyclingnews.com news post about the words of Marco Velo (who was on the team that race).
Regardless of drugs or not, I've heard plenty about how it was so easy to temporarily go under %50. What other big name riders during that time were tested over %50?
I mean especially since Pantani knew he would be tested after that stage, it seems like it would have been a big error for him and his team to not make sure his hematocrit was proper.
I just wonder if it would be proper for me to think that he didn't even deserve to be thrown out of that race.

Still kicking.
Full text of Pantani note read at his funeral
CESENATICO, Italy, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Following is the text of a note written by Italian cyclist Marco Pantani on nine pages of his passport before his death, and read out at his funeral on Wednesday his friend and former manager Manuela Ronchi.
The note appeared to have been written during a recent trip to Cuba. It was written in Italian and translated by Reuters.
"For four years I was in every court. I lost the desire to be like every other sportsman. But cycling paid and many youngsters have lost faith in justice. I'm suffering with this letter.
"The world understands that all my colleagues have been humiliated in their hotel rooms with hidden TV cameras, that tried to ruin many families. After that how can you not hurt yourself?
"I don't know why I stopped myself in these moments of anger if I made mistakes I'd like to know that there is proof but when my sporting life and above all my private life was violated I lost a lot.
"I'm in this country and I want to say that "hasta la victoria" is a great thing for an athlete but it is more difficult having given your heart for the sport with accidents and injuries. But I always got back up.
"What is left? Just a lot of anger and sadness for the violence of the judicial system. My true story should be an example for other sports. Rules yes, but equal for everybody.
"There's not a job where you have to give your blood and where the families of your colleagues are woken up during the night.
"I was always afraid of being spied on at home, in hotels and by TV cameras. I ended up hurting myself to not give up my intimacy, the intimacy of my girlfriend and of other colleagues who also lost, of other families who like me were attacked.
"Go and see what a cyclist is really like. How many people were involved in my sadness as I tried to make a comeback with my dreams as a man which were muddied by drugs, but after my life as an athlete.
"If a bit of humanity helps us understand and asks what makes us hope, when you make a real mistake you understand and you fight with your heart.
"This document is the truth. My hope is that real men or women can read it and defend equal rules in sport for everybody. I'm not a liar, I feel hurt and everybody who believed in me has to speak out."

I've held my tongue on this issue as long as I can.
To be honest, I was never a fan of Marco but I did
respect him emmencely as a cyclist. Yah go ahead call
me an unfeeling bast@rd, its probably true.
All in all, I am very saddened by the entire affair.
Saddened that Marco fell so far from his career heights
into his own personal hell. The post above by Danka is heartwrenching,
it speaks very well of the suffering and loneliness that Marco lived with.
I refuse to comment about allegations concerning overdoses, cocaine etc.
Let the man be.
I am sickened by the in rush of marco paraphanalia and
items at cycling sales sites and e-bay.
An Il Pirrata saddle which wouldn't sell for $10.00 2 weeks ago
has an opening bid of $150 on ebay,
a Marco signed maillot jeunne is currently over $300.
There are 25 hits for Marco Pantani on e-bay alone.
Vultures and ghouls.
Adio il pirrata, and godspeed.

Hell I wouldn't mind if someone put up a bunch of videos of the 98 or 99 Giro, or 1998 Tour de France. Or a Pantani bandana. It would be nice to find something cool that I've been looking for, for cheap, well before his death.

I admit, people can be ghoulish, but mostly what I've seen are letters and tributes on web sites all over the world, even from those who weren't big fans of his and who rooted for Armstrong! Most of it is not ghoulish at all, but there is always that side to any celebrity death, unfortunately. ANd this one has a lot of sordid elements to it. It's not like an accident, such as with poor Kivilev. We all know something like that can happen, even if it's rare, but it's always one of the risks. However, one of the risks of cycling is not supposed to be that you die like Jim Morrison in some hotel. The whole entire thing is sad and I've thought for years how unfair it is that the man's career was derailed in that way.
The photos on the Gazetta were really nice. I liked the one from the Zoncolan where everyone is cheering him on, and that one with Cipo. A nice collection of photos.

Its is sad yes, but at least many will wake up to the horrors Pro Cyclist go through
and some will see the great cyclist Marco was. If people pay TOO MUCH for his merchandise hopefully some will be funneled to his family

Does anyone know of any links to interviews with the man?
I can only find one or two from 2003.
It would be really cool to read anything from him from pre-2002.
Too bad I don't speak italian

Cocaine overdose is the official cause of death.
from cyclingnews:
"The death of Marco Pantani was caused by acute cocaine intoxication," read Dr. Giuseppe Fortuni's report. "Acute cocaine intoxication provoked a pulmonary and cerebral edema which were the cause of death. There are no concrete elements to support the hypothesis of suicide."
