Powertap Upload Issues

yes, I did search, but nothing has helped.

I bought a used powertap off e-bay. The hub is the old style all alloy hub body with a black battery cover.

The computer head unit says "Pro" when I power it on.

I received a docking cradle that was serial as well as a Serial to USB converter. The original software was not with the unit.

I go to Saris and download their Poweragent 7.2. Turns plug everything in and every time I go to configure the head unit or download anything I get a flashing red icon in the lower right corner of the Poweragent window. Click on it and it gives me a java error of some sort.

The kicker is that this is all on my computer at home. I can not install the software on my work computer. So when I am working on this it is when Saris is not in for support.

I believed that it was possibly that the software couldn't see the head unit. When I attempt to connect the head unit is on and says "HOST". Using the serial/usb converter configuration software I can see the com settings. I tried changing com ports (4 as default, went to 11, went to 1, etc....no change).

I have uninstalled and re-installed the software (for the converter as well as for poweragent) many times. Each time I have varied the process of installing vs plugging in the hardware to see if I can get any changes.....nothing.

I do not have the error code with me but can copy it in here tonight.

I would love to run an older version of poweragent that allows you to run the head unit from the serial connection, or that allows you to manually change the configuration settings from within the software (7.2 does not let you), but they won't let me download the old versions from online.

Any ideas?

try a 14 day trail of WKO and see if that works? Will at least give you an idea of where the problem lies.

Was thinking of that. I will eventually get WKO if I can get all of this up and running, just concerned I can't seem to do it using Poweragent....

Check sporttracks too..... sucks for logging but may help you figure out where the issue is. Could be your PC is having troubles with the serial to USB conversion.

That would be my guess as well. Do you have a serial port you can try?

If not, see if there's a poweragent setting for which port you're using. I have to plug my USB cradle into the same physical port every time.

I tried sportstracks but it didn't have a powertap in the device list. Only GPS units.

I have a serial connection that I tried, but nothing, and Saris does explicitly state that 7.2 no longer supports serial docking.

Also in 7.2 there is no longer anywhere you can get to in order to configure the port settings from within the software. Silly really. You would think they would let you test configuration. I am assuming that's because it's "USB" now....

Funny thing is that many people mention they get a "device not found" kind of window when the commmunication fails, but I don't even get that.

Hmm....was thinking that. They do mention that I could still run 7.0.1 with serial, but no longer offer it via download on their site. Any idea as to where I could download that?

it's a free 14 day trial, nothing to lose and makes poweragent look like bollocks

Yeah, try WKO+.

The other option is to call Saris now, when they're open and have them dig up an installer for you.

Thanks to BF I was sent a link to an old version of poweragent. Not as nice, but it worked right off the bat. Awesome.

I would, but it was a link to a member's computer. I'll let him post it here if he wants the traffic.

5.0

It's funny because it has Landis on the splash screen as it loads up.

5.0 man. That is pretty old - I have another version if you want to try it. It's actually post-dates the other one, but it's smaller so I was guessing the larger one was newer, maybe not necessarily true. I just did a fresh windows install so I am trying not to load my computer up with junk I don't need otherwise I would install it myself.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Ever since loading Windows 7 onto my computer, I've been battling to download files from my Powertap 2.4 to the Poweragent software.

It goes like this:
- Start the program, switch powertap unit to show HOST, so there is a connection.
- Click on the download icon and the download starts.
- After a few seconds the download stops and gives me an error message: something about "IO error"
- After that the software does not find the unit again, so I need to reboot the computer to try the whole process again.
- i'm running out of memory on my unit so need to sort this out ASAP.

A few answers to some expected questions:
- YES, I've already oploaded the latest version op Poweragent, version 7.5.1.19
- YES, I've already oploaded the latest version of JAVA

Any other suggstions

Thanks
Francois

To Psimet:

I had similar problems when I started. It read "data" and everything. I replaced the batteries everywhere and it worked after the next ride. Try that.
