So should I take NOS during a race or before? I'm curious because the canisters weigh a lot and I would like to know if the amount of power I gain will counteract the weight penalty.

Does anybody have examples of % power increase when on NOS that they'd be willing to share?
    Is trick from science!

Is there a way in Golden Cheetah to see normalized (not average) power for a specific interval? I need to define the interval after the fact (I didn't hit the lap button during the ride).

... meh, I looked for a while, then I just exported the ride data to excel and calculated NP myself.

a look into the life of a young man struggling to race his bike

saturday's race (or at least the portion beofre i got dropped:

    time:
    19 minutes and 48 seconds
    average power 359
    normalized power: 410
    averaged cadence: 99 rpms
    average hr: 182
    95% hr: 189

Sunday's race where i did well:

Time: 1 hour 34 minutes and 25 seconds
    average power: 300
    Normalized power: 320
    average cadence: 96 rpms
    average hr: 169 (LOLZ)
    95% hr: 172

I was a bit stupid in sunday race, and had to cover a lot of moves to make sure i was in the break, and my average hr was through the roof during the first 20mintues, but the next hour and ten minutes was low z3 hr.

Training with power and coach for about 3 weeks now. Been on the bike a total of 2 years Cat3. My question pretains to leg discrepencies and power output. If one leg is a little longer or noticebly longer (as in I can really notice that my left leg is doing most of the work and the right one doesn't seem to be engaged much at all will it,

    A) affect your overall average power your capable of putting out?

    B) wear you out quicker

    C) make your power numbers jump around more on the garmin?

New to this stuff so forgive my lame questions but its nagging me since ive really started to notice a difference in left right pedalling.
My left shoe does have some yellow shims that were put under there when I first started cycling and had knee problems, but now that Im flexible and comfortable maybe they arent needed and thats whats causing this.

I'll answer your question my own way (which is I won't answer what you are asking).
I would really focus on pedal stroke and these questions will answer themselves. Try doing one legged drills to see what you pedal stroke is like and report back. Based on what you asked I would surmise that your pedal stroke is up/down rather than up/out (circles versus ovals).

If one leg is shorter than the other then one leg must be longer than the other.

    See?

Taking the shims out is a bad idea.

I had a retul fit 2 months after i began cycling in 2011 and the fitter and I cant recall exactly why the shims were installed but i believe it was to get the angle of my foot correct as I had alot of wierd motion in my pedal stroke. Because I had just started cycling I was alot heavier than I am now and very unflexible and unfit. After 2 years i have dropped alot of weight and have become very flexible again. Gonna have another retul fit in 2 weeks with him again as part of the concern with the right leg is Im experiencing alot of knee pain above and to the inside left of the right knee and a little below the knee. This could be cause by having a new bike I just set up 3 months ago or could have something to do with a length isue on my right leg since there is shims on the left side. i stopped riding 5 weeks ago it got so bad. I hope its just bike fit since this one wasnt set up with retul but measured off my previous bike of a different model.

I was kinda curious if my power output would go up if it was indeed determined that my right leg was shorter and not doing as much work as my right. (what would happen if they were working more close to equal). Thanks for the input from everyone

If you had pain bad enough to stop riding, a) kudos to you for not being an idiot and riding through it and b) something is obviously wrong. Go back to square one with the fit. Start from there. Any good fitter will tell you if you have a power imbalance and will help you correct for it. It may take work in the offseason to even things out.

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist; many people who think they have leg length discrepancy actually have a tilted pelvis due to other issues which may be treatable. Using shims to relieve symptoms related to a functional imbalance may actually make things worse in the long run.

Back in march after a weekend of racing where I jumped right into the team van after my race and drove home for 3 hours without stretching. Guys were in a hurry. 2 days later it got sore and flared up. I blamed some of it on not stretching, but then a month down the road it got unbearable, at which time I stopped riding for a week, came back to the bike, got a coach and PM. Started fresh and now its bearable but not great going to get another retul fit will hopefully do it right. Gonna bring a fresh (new pair of shoes(same brand and model) and also switch pedals from shimano to SpeedPlay zeros and let him set me up right. The first retul fit I had fixed my knee problems within a week, but Im on a new bike now and set it up myself so Im pretty sure it's not quite rightwhich is probally alot of the problem.

Funny on the first fit he did mention something about my right hip roatating different. Wierd how I remember that. What does that mean when it does that and is it easy to fix?

I don't use Training Peaks, is 0.82 the IF?

[edit] from context in the article that must be the IF. "Sörensen’s normalized power for the final 60 minutes was a staggering 364w, which is nearly his functional threshold power." 307NP/0.82IF=371FTP.

    Correct.
Reports like this kind of puts everyone's e-wang into perspective.
With an FTP of 371 and a bodyweight of 140 pounds that puts his w/kg at 5.83w/kg.
That's .8 w/kg higher than I was last year at FTP.

it's about .4 higher than my peak ftp for all of two weeks when peaking for nationals. I was close to his weight, but had about ten less watts at ftp.

No disrespect to you (being serious) is that at that level those numbers are repeatable week after week, their races are so much longer (~6 hours) and the power numbers can be misleading due to the fact that races often start out very easy and end at blistering paces, their surges aren't like local levels where they surge for 5 minutes - they surge for an hour...

BTW you do have great numbers.

i meant to add that in. crap it's been a longer couple of weeks. I dont think i've ever needed 5.4x w/kg in a race. in our races we max out at 5-10 minute hard efforts. A pro level race is so difference you're doing .98 if for the last hour of a 6 hour race. I dont think i normally have a .98 hour in any race (i would be otb so fast in a uci race, basically 2 hours in when they felt like pushing the pace).

also these pros are over 5.8 week after week after week. After my peak for nationals i was fried. I raced poorly for the rest of the year, and it took me nearly a month to get the last of my 2 upgrade points after gettting over half in a series of three weeks.
