What gets me is the TSS. 461. 162 miles. 6:40m.

Unless I'm interpreting incorrectly, he's not working anywhere near as hard as I do.
In March I did a 75 mile ride that took me 5 hours. (Group ride with lots of climbing I'm not very good at.) My TSS was 375.
All things equal, I'd take over 10 hours to do that 162 miles and have a TSS of nearly 800.

well first off you ahev to compare hours not miles. second you rode at .86 if which is hella hard for 5 hours. his .81 is still hella hard.

first thing to note is that it may be underestimated. i remember them saying that Tim Duggan was at 5.2w/kg when they analyzed his effort from when he won the national championship. 5.2, perhaps in the dead of winter, but definitely not when he's in top form.

second thing to note is that what really sets the pros apart is the duration for which they can hold an intensity. Say i'm at 4.5 ish, top climbers are usually 6.0 ish. I say to myself, hey, not bad, 75% there. But that's not the right way to look at it. What is the right way is to say, hmm, he can hold 6.0 for an hour. I wonder for how long i can hold that? When you do that calculation, he can hold 6.0w/kg 20 times as long as i can do 6.0w/kg. That's the point often missed.

bingo! i think im at 6 w/kg for a whole 10 minutes max. I could hang on to a pro climber (if he only road at threshold, not at his max effort for say 20 minutes) for about 10 minutes. Those are not good odds. and 6 hours into a race? not a chance! I remember seeing a tp post where one pro held some crazy If number during the last hour of a race 3 weeks into the tour. hell after 5 days of hard traiing i can't even ride z1.

how long could I keep up with a pro @ 3.8 W/kg ?

They should make some kind of training video where we can compete with our power meters vs the pro's. It would sell like hotcakes.

I have just a handful this year, most of those were races, and one was revised downward after retesting my FTP.

Back in 1991 or 1992, Lemond did a "Lemond Challenge" mtb time trial. Anyone could go up to Vail in the 8 weeks and take a shot at it. I had some Cat 1 friends give it a try, and they couldn't touch him.

THere are also a bunch of pro-held Strava segments in town, and nobody around here can touch those either...

What was the IF for that? I bet your FTP is set too low.

actually it doesn't. you rode at an if of .812, the same as the pro, except he rode for an addition hour and a half or so (it was 6 hours right?) look at time not miles. i can ride in a group for 4 hours and do over 100 miles, or i could go out and ride a century slowly in 7 hours. they are not the same ride, one is a 4 hour ride and one is a 7 hour ride.

If anyone was wondering, the Quarq Riken does pretty well in the rain. No issues with reading or data when I downloaded it later on in the day.

That was the type of rain I was in when my S975 went haywire, but it's fine now...

That was today dude. I could barely see anything for at least 25 miles in this race. It was raining pretty hard and peoples wheel spray was all over. The day before I got caught for about 10mins in a serious monsoon type rain too, no issues.

I think the Riken are better designed than the older S975's. I asked Quarq about it and they say that all of the newer ones are tested in a pool before leaving the factory.

Did you do anything to yours or just let it dry?

Just let it dry...

The forecast for this coming weekend's race is wet...I guess I'll be testing it out then...

My Powertap Elite+ just **** the bed. I looked down the other day and was showing zero watts (paired to GE500). It showed signs of life on the rest of the ride but was going in and out.
I replaced the batteries with known good ones and now it is not even detected by my garmin. I am going to pull the battery board back out and check all connections but I was careful and thorough and the electrical connection looked good and the batteries were firmly in place.

Anything else I should check?

Good on those two counts but double checking. I will also reflow the connections if I see any cold joints. The bearings are getting rough so I may cough up for a full service.
