When looking at FTP, you want to focus on Average, not Nominal. I believe you can have NP above your FTP for an hour, but not AP.

My NP is regularly above my FTP for 90 minute group rides where I'm doing short, aneorobic efforts on hills. That doesn't mean my FTP is low, it just means that it was a lot of sprinting followed by a lot of sitting in. I haven't done a test in a while, but I'm pretty sure my FTP isn't too low based on other intervals.

Yeah, I have several NP buster training rides. Pretty easy to go out there for an hour and do eight or nine 1' intervals and come back with an NP 10% over threshold.

Although NP should in theory be comparable directly to FTP, in practice it is not.
NP is supposed to be a measure of the physiological effects of effort. Hard efforts are weighted much more strongly than easy efforts, and ideally the difference in weighting reflects the difference in physiological effects of the effort.
If the weighting is an accurate reflection of your own personal physiology, it should not be possible for NP to be higher than FTP for an hour. That is supposed to be the point of the weighting. A surge-and-sit-in hour with an NP equal to your FTP should reflect the same total physical effort as a consistent hour at FTP.
But it's just a simple model and people are all different. If you regularly see NP for 1+ hour rides that is higher than your FTP, I think it means your ability to recover from those specific short, hard efforts is better than the model predicts. Or else the model is simply not sophisticated enough to handle different types of efforts.

Thanks, lots of good info. I'll probably re-test in a couple weeks, but it doesn't sound like what I'm seeing is really out of line.

Does anyone have a copy of the mac software for the SRM PCV?
The SRM download link is no longer operational, and the new versions of the software do not support the PCV.
I need to make some changes to settings, thus TP and GC won't work.

Just got a used, wired powertap wheelset a couple of weeks ago. It's been great so far, but when I was washing my bike today while the computer was disconnected from the stem mount, I unwittingly got water on the computer-pickups (those four little metal tabs which connect to the LYC).
When I went out to ride today, the speed and power readings were all over the place. However, the computer showed it was connected to the hub for most of the ride, so I figure it's a problem with the mount itself. Any experience with similar situations? Will I have to get a new mounting system?

I just downloaded the firmware update for my Garmin 500 a couple of days ago. It's ready for Vector pedals now. It also asks if I want to calibrate the PM at startup, where I had to go through the screens for calibration in the past.

Sounds like a good change - folks have wanted quicker access to calibration for a loooooonnngg time. But hey, if you want to see your ride stats on the Garmin unit, you can get to that muy pronto. We all do that, right?

I'm worried it will have a 5th window I need to tap through now. power detected! HR detected! Satellites detected! Movement Detected (despite having already pressed start)!
buuuuut, previous calibration was buried WAY too deep. though I just backpedal mostly.

I got a Stages PM last week for my cross bike and it works great except for some reason it won't zero-calibrate from my 500 (which is on firmware v3.0, the latest is 3.3). The Garmin just waits forever on the "calibrating..." screen. I can calibrate my Quarq and Powertap from the Garmin, and I can calibrate the Stages PM with no problem using my iphone, so I have no idea what the problem is. I did do a factory reset on the 500 with no change. I guess I will try updating the firmware.
BTW don't be hating on DC rainmaker. That guy does us a huge service with his product reviews. And he is a real athlete, maybe not a bike racer, but not a superfred poseur either.
