The NY Spring Series Monkey Wrench

A. Van Dunk, the organizer of NY's Spring Series, has thrown a Massive Monkey Wrench into the Global Locate Spring Series World Domination Plans by making one of the races an Individual TT in 'Palisades Interstate Park' (I'm trying to find out if that means the L. Welch to Tiorati TT course there) in late April.

The first four weeks are in Central Park, then it moves to Prospect with one race at Floyd Bennett Field (which I may attend if I can figure out a way to get there without leaving my house @ 3:30AM).

Well done Dunkster.

Hey gsteinb, do you have a TT bike?

River Road TT? A TT up the Alpine hill would be pretty cool.

TT's, by their very nature, are anything but cool.

I suspect it will be from the Alpine Boat Basin to the Englewood Boat Basin, southbound along the River Road that runs at the base of the cliffs. That's some dicey **** on a TT bike on some of those screaming 40 mph descents if they haven't repaved that bad boy in a while. I use to train there all the time. Looking forward to it. But that's really a Van Dunk curveball.

TTs by their very nature, are the epitome of cool. They are a veritable Skunkworks of Amazing Top Secret Bike Schwag. I will try to smuggle out Spy Photos and post them on BF.

You do realize of course that this is my One Chance to prove that I am not the slowest guy in the entire 35+ Spring Series. I'm not sure that's possible, but it will be fun trying.

I'm taking my ball and racing somewhere else. I'm not hanging a spring race weekend on a 5-8 mile TT. Or buying a bike for it, for that matter. Spring is about training miles. Christ.

A 9 mile TT does seem pretty short. If anyone knows the course is it hilly or flat?

If it's the course that's being discussed it's rolling with an approximately 8 minute hill at the end.

I put another email in to Van Dunk for clarification on the TT details. Landslides in Feb will be cleared in days, the TT isn't until April.

Why do I get the feeling from that silly over-dramatic photo this is actually a rather unimposing 10' wide pile of rocks that three guys could clear by hand in two hours. Or that a backhoe could clear in 20 minutes.
That's how the slides on the Palisades tend to be most of the time. They are rather routine.

It does sound like the TT will START in Englewood, to to a turnaround in Alpine (most likely that little traffic circle just above the Boat Basin but at the base of the Alpine DHuez climb), and return. In either case, the longest climb on any of those roads is about 5-6 minutes, my best time was like 5:30 from the Alpine Boat Basin at the Hudson River all the way up to the police station. There are no eight minute climbs anywhere on those roads I know of, and I'm familiar with them all. But it doesn't sound like that longer Alpine climb will be part of it. There are rolling climbs on that road, the longest are a couple of minutes, if that. Short rollers, but it's not an easy or flat course.

And that Alpine climb isn't long, it's like a mile or so.

AVD confirms that this is the proposed TT course, permit is pending.

The good lord willing they'll shove the permit where the sun doesn't shine and we'll get on to racing the way it was intended to be.

The sun doesn't shine on the end of my driveway, it's still a sheet of ice. They can shove it there.

So is it a hilly 9-mile course? Would anybody use a TT bike for that then?

It's not really a climb, it's rolling, it's clearly a course where a TT bike will confer a significant advantage. If they have a brain in their heads (they don't) they'd limit it to regular road bikes (they won't) so as not to bust everyone's balls (like my team leader Gary).
