CO Race Weeked #2 - Report
Sorry, its long again. I'm not really a fan of the "I raced. I got 2nd. The end" posts. THOSE are a waste of my mouse-clicking-finger muscles. This covers 3 different races anyway
Met someone from these forums from DU, but I'm not positive who. Come say hi again next weekend if ya like! I'll be 'teaching' the clinics agains. Those goddam clinics...
Short Version:
Crit on saturday, TT on sunday.
Saturday: Won the field sprint for 7th in the Men's A, took 2nd out of a break in the Pro/1
Sunday: 3rd best time at split, flatted, had to ride with a flat up and down a big ass hill, got a new wheel, finished last. Estimated time lost (calculated before I knew my time) was ~3 minutes due to the not wanting to die on the downhill and the wheel change taking forever. I ended up 3:06 behind the winner. Damn.
Longer version -
Saturday collegiate: The Men's A was once again 60 minutes, and the field was the usual 30-40 riders. Pace was pretty slow but people were still getting dropped (ha). Eventually a group of 4 got up the road, with one of our guys in it. We came to the front and controlled the field and the break got a pretty good gap. About 40 minutes in some lapped riders started helping their teammates in the break so we put up a little show of force and hit it hard, bringing the 25 second gap down to about 12 seconds in less than two laps. The break guys got the hint and told their lapped teammates to get lost. As our coach told us to sit up again (by the way, the reason we were on the front was completely unknown to us, we were just following orders) two CU guys put in a perfect attack. Luckily we had Chris latch on, because the break was close enough at that point that they bridged relatively quickly. We now had two guys up the road and CU had 3.
The situation stayed the same for the remainder of the race, although our 'main field' was now down to less than 20 guys since our little effort to pull the break back had shelled everyone who was already hurting. In the finish, our guys up the road sprinted for 2nd and 5th. I won the field sprint for 7th with Dan right behind in 9th.
Av power: 245
Normalized: 283
Sprint: 1234
Pro race:
10 minutes in, bridged up to two riders up the road. Two more bridged, including one teammate, then he fell off so we had 4 guys. My team in the field shut everything down and we had 30 seconds within a few laps. Almost lapped the field, biggest gap I heard was 1:07. Last couple laps were some crazy cat-and-mouse, and I was totally fried after two hours of hard racing already, so all I did was follow moves. I messed up and came into the final roundabout in 4th wheel, guy on the front came out of the corner with a gap and even though I passed the other two I couldn't make up that much lost ground in 300m. I think I could have taken it if I had come out 2nd or 3rd...
Av power: 266
Normalized: 301
Sprint: didn't have powertap for last 15 minutes. Peak was 1001 for the first 45.
<--- this is what shame looks like
Sunday TT:
Good power all the way out the first leg, and back. TT position felt really good, and the bike felt fast. 3rd at the split according to coach, before the hill which is usually where I make up time. Got part of the way up the hill and heard the ominous pst pst pst pst. Kept climbing, fending off my minute man who I had just passed until the top, then letting him come by for the downhill. By the bottom I couldn't even see him anymore down the looooong straight away. Found some random guy on the side of the road to give me his wheel, took forever for him to get it out of his bike, finally got going again. Came in with a time of 22:30, but lost at least 2.5-3 minutes. Winner beat me by 3:06. Bah

Looks like my teammate Zach took 3rd. He's going well this year. So are you, apparently.

One of my teammates who is from Wisconsin knew that guy, I think they used to be madison partners. Crazy strong dude, he was taking monster pulls. Couldn't sprint his way out of a wet paper bag, but I guess that comes with the 'monster pull' territory

Nice racing. As RX and I discussed one time regarding 2nd: it's too easy to forget that there are 60 riders behind you.
Congrats on doing well in that tough field after already racing
