Timing Chip Mounting
Pretty sure they'll go over this at the race on Saturday, but in case there's an easy answer: How do you mount these damn things? It showed up in an envelope with no instructions, no nothing. Does it change according to the promoter/venue/whatever? I'm thinking it goes at the bottom of the fork with zip ties, right? Technology.

Here in Florida, we use a different chip, but it goes on the fork blade "halfway up" (read: as far forward as you can get it) with two zip ties.
But ours has foam padding and is round. Yours looks more like it might attach to a chain stay. But I'm just talking out of my ass here, as I really have no clue.

I've seen some who zip tie it to the underside of the downtube as well. I guess some want it as close to the mat as possible.

You want it on the fork since that crosses the line first
but check with your series promotor, usually its on their website. They may specify it to be on the chainstay.

There are two types of timing chips. Active Timing Chips and Passive Timing Chips. Any respectable race promoter will use active chips as they can handle the faster speeds crossing the receiver. As others noted, the further in front, the earlier your time will be recorded. Most of the promoters specify where they want the chips installed. About 90% specify the front fork (either side...but most do left). The key for the promoter is the entire race to be uniform with chips in the same location. However, when in doubt, front fork.

We're lucky if they can find a bell to ring for the last lap. Good thought, though.
This is an active chip. I guess we'll wait and see where the promoter wants everyone to mount them. Just wanted to know if there was a standard flip it/HTFU/fredioactive BF.net solution I'd missed.

I've done 'em on my ankle and fork. Regular zip ties or cheap velcro straps. You could just have a spectator stand near the line and casually walk past at the right time as well. No mounting worries either. Unless she's cute.

For Utah: Zip tie it to the fork for now. They're making us fork-mounts that will be available later at our races (free), for those that have purchased the chips. Mine arrived yesterday, too.

I just through it along with some zip ties in my seat bag until I get there on Saturday. I'm sure that however I mounted it, it would be just wrong enough that I'd have to do it again.
