Good job bdc - way to be be the hammer, not the anvil.
I stage raced this last weekend with MattM and Jordangerous - did alright.
With two stage races under belt and a decent number of races already for the year, I'm re-focusing my goals for the rest of this year and learning skills to target races next year.

Dude, you beat about 70 guys in the RR yesterday! Including me... were you top 10 for that? Points?
Good work out there, and thanks for the extra water and mental support.

Pretty tough race at Carl Dolan 3/4 yesterday. I'm realizing that I can hang in a 3/4 race but not do much else. I apparently used all my energy because I went to sprint and there was nothing there (time to do some tabatas, I think). Got 17th out of the cat 4s. Helped a teammate get a prime though.
I need to go do a 4/5 race to boost my morale...

73km road race (12 laps).
My first road race. Managed to stay with the group for the first four laps at which point I realized I was in over my head, and could no longer hold on to that final wheel.
Had a lot of fun, learned a lot, and can't wait until the next race.

Suffered like hell yesterday at Vleeshuis Ronde road race in Bakersfield. The course was named after an old abandoned slaughterhouse along the course...and man it was a slaughter. We did 3X30 mile laps w/ ~2300ft of climbing per lap. It was 3 miles of flat to start then a solid 15 minute climb followed by 5 big rollers with no rest in between. After a few miles of descending there was 3 miles of flat followed by an 800m kick up to the finish line.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/59036
It felt like there was nowhere to rest. The descents weren't long enough to get much recovery and a few guys were driving the pace on all the climbs. Once we hit the flats it was a constant series of attacks. I marked a few moves on the second lap and beginning of the third but got popped on the final time up the main climb. By that point the pack was down to 15 from ~50 at the start. I spent the last hour riding tempo by myself and ended up finishing 14th. After I got popped the pack split into multiple groups and I don't think any group came to the line with more than 3 people. Absolutely brutal.

Thank you. Yeah, upgrading to C's. I've seen enough sketchy cornering (though i did one slightly bad cornering myself yesterday, but didn't come close to taking anyone down). Guys cutting the wrong apex, swinging wide, etc. That said, i won't be going to Eastern's as i have a defense coming up on the 27th for my graduate degree. Time to do a ton of threshold training & base miles in anticipation for the Cat5's races this summer. Scary thing is that people in C's would beat me by a good minute for the hill climb. I know most courses don't have that much climbing, but it's kinda scary regardless.
The crit yesterday was a total s**t show. Two crashes, both of them because people can't corner. With two laps to go i decided to jump to the front. I know i probably won't win, but it was a lot safer as i don't trust many in the field on taking at-speed turns (especially the 130 degree one near the end). As i have no teammates, i basically "led out" the field. Got caught at the line, and did a marginally acceptable bike throw for 2nd.

Not sure I've had a bad charlie horse before and I'd feel fine but as soon as I stood up to pedal it was like someone was stabbing me, so it could be a situation where I feel fine as early as tomorrow but as soon as I start to put force down the pain appears. Hoping that I'll be ready to race this Sunday but I'm not going to push it. Trying not to let any fear about racing get into my head, I'm more concerned about that happening than anything else.

Tour of Walla Walla for me. Might be the last race as a 5. 5th in the TT, 22nd in the crit, and 3rd in the RR = 4th in GC. I had a great time. I took a look at my TT numbers as compared to the fast guys in Cat 4. It's gonna be a whole new world
mattm, et al, sorry I missed you guys. Hopefully we'll be racing together soon.

Nick, foam roller/use a rolling pin/the stick on your calf. It'll hurt like hell but feel better faster. Loosens it up real good. Also icy hot or equivalent.

First race - Hermann RR, combined 4/5's.
Pretty much everything everyone has said about first races was true except for one thing - this nonsense about "attack attack attack". Sheesh, you gotta be kidding - more like "hang on, hang on, hang on".
But it was definitely a good learning experience and has me wanting to come back for more.

And to put some of the TT times in perspective, there were at least three sandbaggers in the 4's that I know of at Walla Walla, two who had points but were already registered as a 4, and one who had 30 points but wants some to expire so he can get a win. And the Cat 4 TT winner's parents are supposedly super-duper athletes of some sort, so there's that too.
In a sense the 4's just got a little easier over the weekend.. but then guys like local Dave Z who's been killing sprints in the 5's (you know him?), and will soon be mixing it up with us in the 4's - so it starts all over again.
Anyway see you in the 4's soon! Did you send in the upgrade request yet?

@ jimmy - did we talk at the pizza place by the crit on saturday night? I get the impression that we quite possibly did since there weren't many guys from your squad there... I was wearing an RCR windbreaker and talked to two guys from your team that evening.

Race Report from Sunday - Circuit Francis J Clarke, last of the Bethel Spring Series. It's a long post, even I think so, therefore it's a War & Peace kind of thing. If you finish reading it in less than 54 minutes then you read it quicker than how long it took to actually race 30 laps.
