Just got back from Roger Millikan Crit Cat IV
Smoother course than Red Trolley but had to deal with last lap crashes that my buddy and I had to slow down around them. We finished 18th and 19th. Crashes happened at both left and right toward the finish line. And it caused 20min delay for another race due to ambulance.
Since Mothballs, crashing seems routine.
NP 253 watts
AP 216 watts
RPE lower than Red Trolley/Mothballs =)

Brea CA crit report.
Back to back 35+ & cat4
Got my butt kicked at my first 35+ race. (technically second but last week it was my 3rd race on the same day) Got dropped 3 laps to go but finished the the race chasing the pack. Stopped at the finish line, ripped the 35+ race number off my jersey and pretty much immediately started the Cat4 race. Since I was already cooked from the 35+ race I didnt have any expectations and thought that I will get dropped on the first lap but somehow managed to stay on and finished the race mid pack

Nice job everyone!
I love reading the race reports on my "off" weekends.
Good reports from the first timers. It seems like those who post here always report that they learned the right lessons from CAT 5. Just for kicks it would be fun to hear a report like..."first crit today it sucked! I'm going back to triathlons."

Having attended all the Fremont Early Bird Crits for this year I definitely do feel that the 5 weekends of waking up at 4 AM to drive from Sacramento to Fremont and not getting home until 2 PM was worth it. As short as they were, I definitely did learn a lot. Having done my first official crit yesterday at the Bicycles Plus crit I could definitely tell that the skills were useful. Half of the people were on their hoods, many were not picking the right lines into turns, and the like. While I managed to steer clear of most of it, one guy's attempt to sprint rubbed wheels with the guy behind him, both went down, and I was behind them. And with bikes on both sides and behind me, I did the only thing I could do:
Optimistic voice: "Well I'm screwed, so here we go!". I made it out with barely any damage to the bike, and a sore shoulder but no road rash.
Today I was at the Fremont Early Bird Crit #5, and you could tell who had been to all 4 and who had not. It's all about the learning experience though since it counts from mass starts. It was a little sketchy with a few close calls, but for the most part it wasn't so bad.
Personally I would rather do a triathlon because for me the only scary part is the OWS... and even then if you get scared you can just float on your back... instead of hitting pavement

Got my 10th cat 5 point this morning at the Velo Promo Early Bird crit.
The clinic before hand was sketchy. A junior slammed on this brakes and caused the two guys behind him to go down. People were having problems figure out how a rotating paceline works.
Crit wasn't much better. Much more sketchy then the previous two EB's I raced. People rubbing tires, not holding their lines through corners, dive bombing corners, etc. I just wasn't feeling it and chilled in the back with a nice buffer of space around me. Was tempted to just bail after the start but I figured I might as well get some riding in since I'd gotten up early and driven over there.
Really made me appreciate how much fun the Central Coast Circuit race that I'd done the previous day was.

another roger millikan report:
big fields today with the great weather we've been having, the 50+ race had a field limit of 75 and had riders on the waiting list like a bunch of cat4/5 newbs! i heard them announce 129 riders for the 35+ race
45+
we had to wait 40 minutes to start our race due to a bad crash in the women's race before ours and they shortened our race to 35 minutes. course is a long squiggly rectangle with a slight uphill from 3 to 4 (one of the short sides) and then ~150 meters to the line that is a little less uphill.
it took me a while to move towards the front and at about halfway i thought i would have no chance and would just roll in and finish mid-pack. but as it got a little later in the race found myself closer and closer to the front, on the back side on the last lap i hooked up with my only teammate in the race and he said "follow me". he started to go towards the inside but someone closed the door on him so to the outside we went, pulling me from about 20-30 riders back to inside the top ten through turn three. i hit it as we went up the hill and started passing riders, we caught a 2 man break that had been off for a couple of laps and planned to go to the right of them as everyone else went left but the riders went right when they saw the field coming and i had to swerve around to the left interrupting me for a spilt second. as we hit final turn i was probably fifth and those riders had taken a pretty wide line, i was able to shoot up the inside and passed them with a better line. 75 meters from the line i started to die and saw one rider on my left about half a wheel behind, i almost gave up at this instant as i didn't have enough to get out of the saddle but knew i couldn't let my teammate down for his great leadout and let out a big grunt and shifted to a harder gear and pulled away to take third behind the usual suspects, a couple of amgen boys (cat 1s) not bad for a fat old cat 3.
cat 3:
race didn't start til 4:10 and was shortened to 30 minutes, no one crashed but they tried hard to. nothing left in the legs ~10-12th or so.
this is the finish of the cat 4 race, this race used to known as 'the st. valentine's day massacre'

That crash is crazy curb-to-curb action. Impressive. If that's not incentive for finishing top-5, I don't know what is.

Might have been just as well, some airhead rode his MTB across the course on the last lap and took out a bunch of people. Fast crit, 28 MPH till my tire blew out.
Doing a couple of NorCal races next weekend then following it up with Calville. I have two tires to fix and a derailleur to repair.

I fell out of that break. I've got very little training in the legs right now and was just going out as a decoy to make the other guys chase; we had our strongest guy 4 secs down on GC. I ended up doing a 25 minute solo bridge before we got the group together and was completely fried. The guys weren't noting who got up the road so we messed up. Still salvaged 3rd and 5th on GC. Flatted with two to go in the crit as I was bringing up or GC guy.

Make sure to say hi if you see me at Callville. I will have the only kit on that looks like my profile avatar. Feel free to contact me with any questions about the race as well.
Yeah, what a mess at the crit huh? I guess it was a homeless guy that just ended up on the course with his POS bike.

Valley of the Sun- Pro/1
TT- 18th (31:07): I haven't spent much time on my TT bike this winter so my power was down a bit from last year. Fortunately I made some positional and equipment changes. The conditions were slower and my power was lower but I did the same time. I can live with that.
Road Race- OTB: The field went ape s**t on the first lap. It was a huge battle into a crosswind for the first 5 miles followed by a tailwind up the climb. We drilled it HARD up the climb and the pack split into about 5 groups. 15 riders started an echelon over the crest and were never seen again. The field chased hard for another lap but they were long gone. With about 15 miles remaining I nailed a pothole and flatted. I was able to chase back just in time to get shelled on the climb. Both of my teammates also flatted. Just one of those bad luck days.
Crit: Fast and moderately technical course with terrible pavement. It's not my kind of race and I was pretty much pack fodder. I was sitting at the back with 2 laps to go when someone crashed on the far side of the course. There was no one nearby so I stopped and helped get him off the road.

35+ cat 4
Result: DNS
needed to leave the house around 445 to get there by 7-715. Alarm went off at 420. Hit the alarm button thinking...okay five more minutes. Next time I looked at clock 735. Next choice...pancakes or waffles?

UCLA Road Race
Pearblossom, CA
Collegiate Mens D
Results: Finished
Arrived at 6am, sat around in the car for half an hour glad it wasn't raining or snowing, just windy and cold. Reg'd when it opened, but didn't feel like getting on the trainer and took a while getting ready (25 min?). Uphill at the start so I knew I'd have to try and hold the pack in sight and hopefully catch on the decent. More or less had everyone in sight until a minute or two from the top of first climb. Past a couple on the decent. Tried to hang with a couple CalPoly guys after decent but slowly was worked off 'em. Had a UCLA guy catch on on the 2nd lap during the climb. Was in no position to work him off so just grinded through the climb, bombed the decent and worked through to the finish. After the decent, marked one of the CalPoly guys up ahead who was still in sight and was now solo, made it up to him before the end as a final goal. Near finish UCLA attacked, I heard the gear switch, saw the tire move up, so I jumped. Unfortunately I didn't have the legs to chase on the uphill finish. Though note to self: Gear up when there's an attack, don't just stand
Felt like a good race and I was glad to finish with someone rather than alone OTB lol

Donaldson Center Road Race.
Masters 35+
Missed my clip, slammed my shin. Started last.
Got pissed and put on the throttle to pass 50+ guys to get to the front. It was super aggressive and I had 2 teammates who were up there as well. But, before the first lap I was in the break. The one that stayed away. Seven of us.
We had 2 minutes on the field by the last lap and we started feeling each other out. I went with everything that tried to go. Then I found myself up front and slowed but kept a look out. Before I knew it we were on the back side of the course and I saw a guy go. I pounced on the pedals and went with him. Within a twinkling of an eye we had a huuuge gap on the break. Unfortunately I was in a pickle. He was hurting but I knew he had a stronger sprint. If I attacked him then I might blow up and get gobbled up by the break away. If I don't attack him he will definitely kill me on the sprint. So I stayed on the front and kept drilling it making the gap between us and the other 5 a lot bigger. at 200 meter he went - just like I thought - I tried to stick with him but could only close it within a half a bike length.
Soooo.... 2nd place!!!!! F'ing unreal. So unreal.
At one point I thought he was going to crack and I would cross the finish solo with a big gap. But ... whatever. It was still awesome.

What a poopy race.
Cat 4. Imperial Crit, IDGAF/30-or so
Got dropped from the winning break with about 8 to go, rolled in with the field and didn't contest the sprint despite descent position going into the last corner. Points were 5 deep and break was 5 strong (without me).
Slowed down for my cooldown lap and noticed a strange squeaking noise. Pulled over and it turns out the my rear brake pad had been rubbing on the right side, for who knows how long. Grrrrrrrr....
I rode to the race from my cousins house (6 mi away) and got a flat. Maybe I should have checked the brake pad positioning after I repaired it...
Hopefully tomorrow goes better.

Just finished cantua creek road race, I was worried about rain but the day was wonderful. Started out smooth, we had a mentor with us who helped out a lot. I didn't have high hopes today being the race had a up hill finish but I was able to attack early and move up with a group of 9. The sprint hurt a lot, my heart rate was at 205. I was able to out sprint a few and took 5th. Overall it was a great race.

ORC 4's. First race of the year. Felt good right away. I was relieved that my legs felt good because theyve been crap all week. After 20 min or so of sitting in we were heading into the cross/headwind, and I was bored and feeling spunky so I jumped. Got a decent gap, one guy bridged. I dont have the strenght to stay away, so I sat up, and slipped back into the top half of the field to recover. People started acting stupid with 2 laps to go and I was just trying to find good position, and got myself right around top 15-20 with a lap to go. Lots of bumping, and a nasty crash with a few hundred meters to go. Couldnt advance from there. Rolled in for 16/50. My fitness seems decent so it was a good day. Looking forward to tomorrow.
