Raced the Lou Maltese Memorial in Central Park today with my brother - Cat 5. He came in second and I got fourth, just edged out at the end. Considering I had a huge speedbump in training this season I did really well.

@Brian, Harlan - congrats to you both! Harlan, perhaps you and your brother could teach the Schlecks a few things.

Wells Ave 'B' (3/4) - 24mi flat, 4-corner crit. My first race as a 4. Slightly faster and slightly smoother than the 5s, as expected. Took a few laps to get my legs under me, and then moved up in the pack. It was nice to learn that I had no more trouble staying at the pointy end than I had in the 5s. It was even nicer to see actual examples of team work, as one team with four or five guys in the race tried to soft pedal when one of their boys went up the road. I got in a few short-lived breaks, and contested a few primes just for kicks. Nothing doing until I jumped to join 3 guys who were trying to bridge up to 2 off the front with about 6 to go. Unfortunately, they were toast by the time we got to them, and we all got swept up in the final lap. I had nothing left, and didn't pretend to contest the finish. Still, a fun day, particularly being in a functioning pace line in a break. Definitely nice to be out of the 5s.

cheers

Wells A. Oh dear, dropped after 30 minutes, with 24 laps to go, what the?? On the plus side, my power was, by far, the best it has been all racing season -- it's getting closer to my past power. And the vf, 1.2, was, by far, the highest that I've had all season for a crit. Not close to the highest vf that I've sustained for an entire race. But, suggests some good variability in on/off efforts. I think my power is coming back; however, I have not been doing intervals, which would certainly help my on/off recovery. One thing at a time.

At the gun, a break away took off. Shovel saw it happening quickly and got into it. I was slightly asleep at the wheel as I was chatting off the line with someone who had my old collegiate jersey on (I did not recognize this person at all, but, was excited to see the old kit jersey pattern). After turn 1, I saw what was going on and put in a decent effort to get there (33s at 510 with 642 in the last 13s of that), but, couldn't close it; so, I fell back and blocked. After one lap, the break of 4 or so was up by about 20-30 seconds! From then on, I felt like I was working hard. We eventually got together after 7 laps or so and I eventually -- maybe by lap 12 or so -- made my way back to shovel and the front. The last time we were near each other is when I pulled through briefly to go to the front after he took a brief pull. After some folks blasted by on the right, I don't remember too much authority in my riding from that point forward.

Shelled in the M35+ at Naugatuck. Teammate SOC hung tough in a break that he'd actually started, got 6th. Former collegiate teammate and his current teammate did a 2 man TTT and lapped the field.

Tended to one of the Navone riders after he crashed in the 3-4 race right after the M35 race. It was really disturbing as he'd shattered his helmet and it meant he'd really hit his head hard.

Someone said that a rider swerved around a manhole cover and the Navone guy fell when the rider swerved back - the "someone" has a bar cam and said he'd get in touch with me with what it captured. It's also possible it was a mechanical (he skipped his chain 1/2 lap before and it caused him to unclip), heat (one guy in the M35 was treated for heat exhaustion), or simply an error on his part.

The conversation with the Navone guy:
He notices me, eyes focus on me.
"Where am I?"
"Back stretch of Naugatuck. You crashed."
"Is Frank (Navone) here?"
"Yeah, he's right next to me."
"Ok. Can you call my wife?"
"Yeah, Frank's calling your wife."
"Is it broken?", gesturing at his collarbone. (Medic yells "Don't move your arm!" so he moves it back)
"Your collarbone looks broken."
"Oh, my work..." Cries for about 15 seconds, then stops crying. Sees me. Focuses on me.
"Where am I?"
"You're on the back stretch at Naugatuck."
...

This went on for the 15-20 minutes it took to get him going on the ambulance. I answered those same questions a few times myself, then others. It was me, Rudy (Navone teammate), Frank, Luciano (another Navone teammate), or Luciano's girlfriend taking turns talking with Jefferson. The only change to the routine above (and it was in the same order, his questions) was when we asked where he put his car keys.

After reading that, I have zero complaints about my race. That is scary stuff. Well wishes to the Navone fellow.

CDR, I am sad to hear that JL crashed out hard in that race. He is a very good rider and a very nice guy. I wish him the best.

I had a bad feeling about Naugatuck, so I never preregistered and decided to do Wells Ave with bostongarden.

Wells Avenue A criterium, 94 degrees, strong crosswind, ~15th, 3 primes. On the ride over, BG and I talked about him being the aggressor early and making a move once he got comfortable, and if that didn't work, to attack after the halfway prime. However, this would be a race dictated by large teams (around 25% of the riders in the race). We lined up on the third row. At the gun, I clipped in quickly and moved right to the front. A couple of Cat2's who have been doing some damage in the Northeast this year jumped, and I went with them. Unfortunately, along came a member from one of the large teams. Three of us rode well together but "that guy" either didn't have the stink or was hindering the break. It was so early I did not think it would have been smart to gap the guy off or attack the group so we let him stay. I took an early no-sprint prime, and the group was caught after 8 laps or so. The rest of the race was all about attacking the field to try and get away from the large teams. I was off the front a lot of the time in small groups that had little interest in working together. I took two more primes, the last one in a 350m drag race, which seems to fit me best at this point in my career. At the end I ran out of fluids, ran out of gas, could not counter the final attacks, and ended up in the front of the field, but I am OK with that.

Nice to see you again, BG, and thanks for you hospitality.

CDR, keep us posted on his progress. from what I heard it was a really bad crash, and I'm very glad I was in front of it and didn't have to see it. I wish him the best in his recovery, head injuries are always especially scary.

I raced Naugatuck Crit today. Course is a downtown, 3 corner course, flat front stretch and the rest is rolling. Really fun course, I prefer crits that have something which makes them interesting.

4/5 - went into this race with the goal of working for teammate joe. we had a total of 4 guys, one of the bigger teams in the field. goal was to shut down any attacks and keep the pace high (he's a really strong ride,r not a pure sprinter). I rode well, stayed near the front of the field, went off the front a few times. it felt good to be able to be a player in a race again, after Pawling I was seriously worried that the long winter base miles and intervals had left me no stronger than last season. I took a big pull with about 5 to go to bring a break back and totally cooked myself, so I didn't really contest the sprint.

3/4 - goal in this race was simply to sit in, having already spent an hour racing the 4/5 race I knew I was tired. started the race at the back, but quickly realized I needed to move up or I was going to get popped. got near the front, and even ended up doing a little bit of work to bring some breaks back. about halfway through the race, there was a horrific crash and the race was neutralized. the break resulted in super tight legs and I suffered for the last 10 laps (they cut 4 laps out). with 2 to go the two riders in front of me sat up. I probably could have closed the gap but I knew I couldn't contest the sprint so I just dropped out. I was happy I stayed in as long as I did.

all in all, I got no results, but I'm happy with how my legs felt and I felt in the group. considering I was doing this race for training, I'm happy with that.

Apparently JL's crash was a "racing incident". He hit a manhole cover and it appears that he couldn't pedal after the hit. I examined his bike a bit after the crash and his front der was jammed into his wheel. I'm wondering if that locked his rear wheel, which is what appears happened - his rear wheel doesn't turn, his pedals don't turn, and he crashes hard.

and hoping nobody

I had the same feeling today based on the forecast (rain) and the carnage that I was involved last week. Only 39 (of a 100 rider field started), and only 13 finished....26 DNFs!!!! So, glad I wasn't there...and hoping nobody went down hard.

The one guy on JL was unhurt essentially, JL took the hit. The other guy in white was shaken but not hurt either. I think JL lost consciousness as the medic suspected, he seems to go limp and doesn't really move after he stops sliding/bouncing.

Mike - you did awesome out there, pulling back break after break. It was fun to watch.

I don't think there were any huge spills in the 4's race, but an early tumble split the field - I think most of those riders were yanked before the finish (and not scored).

But there were indeed crashes in just about every field, and I sat it out since I gotta travel soon and didn't want to do so uncomfortably..

Cool, glad to hear. I chose to bag 60 miles early today before the rain hit, and just prep for the KR race in Eatonville this weekend. Didn't quite escape the rain..day two of being soaked. Hopefully you're traveling somewhere warm and sunny.

Yeesh. That sounds way too familiar. When your kid just gives you a note with all the answers, it's pretty bad.

Giro di Coppi

Raced strong for 49 out of 50 miles. Chased down a few breaks. Threw down a few attacks.

Stayed in the top 5 in the last mile. Forgot that I can't sprint for crap this year. 11th.

Yessir - well done.

CDR - hopefully he'll be OK. The dialog would be funny if it weren't so serious of an issue.

Race #13...Longmont Crit (state championship) SM3's...awesome neighborhood course...

I raced rather dumb. The first ~15 minutes were crazy-fast and I should have laid low. Instead I burned a great book of matches trying to get into a few early breaks then closed down another that I didn't like. Dumb. The field was as sketchy as I've ever experienced. People were all over the place. Even on the straights the entire pack might suddenly and inexplicably shift 5-10 feet to one side or the other pinching folks out. The corners were no better. With half a lap to go the guy right in front of me blew a tire and went down breaking his collarbone. Those in front of the wreck were lucky. I used my last match to pull into the draft of the quickly closing accordian then held on for 14th. Some folks behind me ended up on the sidewalks and in people's flowerbeds.

Good work to you as well! I want to do Wells Ave in the next two weeks before I'm away for a month with work.

Omaha cycling weekend

I didn't have much to do this weekend in Iowa, so I decided to make the drive out to Omaha to do the crit and RR. It was 90F at the start of the 1/2 crit at 8pm. Me and the heat don't get along so my plan was to finish. Pace was pretty high for a while until a break of 5 guys formed. The field chased for a while, which ended up dropping a lot of riders. I won a prime and got 10th, so I made some money. I was happy that I could now afford gas for the way home.

The RR was the worst race I have ever done in my entire short racing career. Started at around 10, and by the time we finished the 71 miles, the temperature was 104. I have no idea what the heat index was, but I heard it was over 120. Two guys got off the front and put 4 minutes on the field really quick. It was so ridiculously hot out no one wanted to chase so we pretty much rode tempo the whole race with some attacks to thin the field. Was in the small main group towards the end and got dropped going into the hill at the finish. 8th place.

After the RR I laid down in the shade for 20 minutes with numerous ice packs all over me. I felt like I needed to puke for almost an hour after the race was over. It was the worst thing ever.
