    Cheapest PT you've seen?

I've been keeping an eye on ebay and have seen a few PT's go for pretty darn cheap. Unfortunately i'm not spending money because i'm saving up for a new place to move into but if the price is right i'm going to have to pull the trigger.

A couple day's ago i almost got a 32 hole PT pro (wired) with a 10speed ultegra cassette on an open pro rim for $300...it was bid up $120 in the last 4 min's putting it just out of my range for right now.

How low can you feasibly go? Also, are all the computers the same? If it didn't come with a HR strap, can you buy one?

I have been looking for one for awhile now but it is tough now because I believe the 2009 models are all different from older models. Plus they changed hubs a couple of times with older models. I also believe head units changed awhile ago too. Also the people selling their stuff on eBay are so vague. I have seen listings with a description that says "shimano powertap" and has a picture of a hub and a mess of wires. I do not know all the models and changes so I plan to pick up a new one pretty soon. Most likely the deal from competitive cyclist.

I'm in no real need to buy a new one. All i want is power, heart rate, cadence, speed/millage. Doesn't have to be wireless. Some of the older ones with steel axles are pretty darn heavy (500+g's) I want to download it to my computer. That's all.

I'm in no real need to buy one now either. I think my rear wheel has bent though and so i do need to replace it...i'd hate to buy a wheel this year only to spend money on another next year.

Do you understand how Ebay works? If so, your definition of "almost" is different from mine...

I've got a lot of ebay experience, i base "almost" on the quality of the ad, the number of bidders, the bidding history/pattern and the price of other similar items of similar end times. A lot of auctions go under the radar...a powertap on an open pro with a new 10spd ultegra cassette selling for $400 is under the radar as far as i can tell.

I snagged a 28h wired PTSL on a DT Swiss 1.1 with computer, chest strap, all the doo-dads for $400, but it was through local Craigslist, not ebay.

If it's on eBay and it sells for quite a bit cheaper than is the norm, there's usually a reason that you're not noticing, i.e. the hub is an old model (yellow shell).

Do these yellow shelled hubs somehow not measure power?

I have two of these aluminium shelled hubs. One I used solely on the trainer, the other I used on my road bike in all kinds of weather. I sealed them with some grease around the hub cover, because this seemed to be the major downfall of this model-they were prone to water damage. After I sealed mine, I never had a problem. They never had dropped power or any other problems. I upgraded to a coded CPU with Coded heart rate strap and that made a big difference.
I am selling one on ebay at the minute.I will be selling all the different components separately for a better price.

FWIW I thought I wanted heart rate too, but since I have been training just fine without it since I got my PT.

If I had it to do over again I would just get the competitive cyclist PT as older models that are not the SL had problems with their drive side bearings. Also, if you get one that needs to be recalibrated then you will quickly start to see any savings from a used PT go out the window as shipping wheels to Wisconsin is expensive.

Cheapest PT I've ever seen (for the particular model) is the one I purchased.

$650. PT SL 2.4, 32h on an Open Pro, Dura Ace cassette, fresh rubber, and all accessories, hardware, and software.

This wasn't a friend's price. I just posted on the local racing association's classified ads and asked for a deal. I got one.

I purchased mine off ebay last year. SL wireless/Open Pro. I got the entire wheelset, with the matching front for $800 shipped, plus the Microsoft 20% deal, which netted another $160. So I ended up paying $640 for PT front and rear.

I did spend another $100 to do the ANT+ update though.
