Branch Brook Race Report 3.21.09

It's cold. But at least it's light out. But it's freezing. It's only 30, but after a couple of 50+ days, me and Unckie Don are freezing. We register, pin the stupid numbers on and we do a warm up lap of the little 2 mile park road circuit. Narrow, a bit windy, Belgian block curbs the whole length on either side, some choppy pavement. In some ways a crash waiting to happen. Oh well.

We queue up for the 45+ race. We know 1/3 of the guys there. It's like a Road Nazi reunion. The 4/5 race goes off, two minutes later it's our turn. Anyway, long story short I achieved my goals:

1.) I did not crash

2.) I did not get shelled

There was a 6 man break up the road, our man Gerry was in it (not sure how he finished, we left before we saw him again), they did stay clear. Safe riding in the 45+, no dicey moves, no crashes. Felt good in the field, finished in the top 15 or so in bunch (probably a 50 man pack total), never felt pressed, took a couple of digs to bridge up to little splinter groups. More my speed than the preposterously testosterous 35+ idiots. However I must confess that I do suspect a few sandbaggers in that race were 35 year olds with forged Birth Certificates.

Baby steps. Central Park tomorrow with the 35+. I am prepared for my humiliation.

P.S. A BF Stalker did approach me before the race to ask 'are you Pcad?' My team mates tell me they get the same questions at races.

Troy Kimball won. I know who got 3rd and 4th (3rd was Kevin Haley from the Hump, 4th was the BMC dude from the Tour de Fred ride). They said Gerry got 6th. In a 6 man break? Don and I found that hard to believe. We'll find out soon enough.

My race reports are more like Human Interest stories, but the only human interested is me. Which does work for me by the way.

Luckily for you I saved my D game as well. I will be deploying the heavy duty bungee cord with the teflon hook.

By the way, try not to ride so fast tomorrow. It's really annoying.

Everything will be OK if we can see the course. I'm hoping I won't need the night vision goggles this week.

I enjoy being stalked. Now if Brandy would only stalk me, I'd really have something.

By the way, there was no prize $ for 22nd place in the 45+ race. I checked.

I was just thinking that two weekends ago I got shelled in the Central Park 35+ race. Then last Saturday I went for oral surgery. The oral surgery was really more fun.

Hey, I crossed the line in front of Unckie Don, now I can bust his balls. By the way, I totally guessed @ 22nd place earlier, and I was correct. I think I should get some prize $ just for that.

While it was fun racing, I'm really not such a big fan of the course. It was narrow and hard to move up (pretty boring too). There was some sketchy ***** in the 4/5 race and no one pulled through in the paceline. I'm sure its a better race in the higher cats where more people know how to ride.

I have a pony...will that work?

And being able to bust someone for finishing ahead of him=yes.

I didn't race the 4/5 but I find that course plenty wide and quite easy to move up at any time, though frankly, the 1/2/3 is always pretty much strung out. The course is pretty boring yes. I liked the long course much better. Still, it is at least a race. A race with kinks to be worked out, but a race nonetheless.

I missed you yesterday Will. Hopefully I'll see you out there soon. Glad nobody seems to have crashed. I think I'm going next Saturday. I like 45+ races : ).
