RR / TT wheelset thoughts?
http://www.planet-x-usa.com/pPC82/10...-Wheelset.aspx
How much slower could a 101mm rear wheel be vs a disc wheel or a wheel with a disc cover? Plus for $850, it seems like a great deal... Thoughts? |
Good price. No info on their hubs though.

Worthy of winning the tx state cat 3 time trial? :)

I'd love to see some data on wheel covers vs Disc. I have a zipp 404 PT that I will be using with a wheel cover from wheelbuilder.com at the State TT. I'll be leaving my Zipp disc at home in favor of power info. It makes me sad to not ride my disc.... As for front a front wheel, a pretty knowledgeable person told me that you need at least 80 mm on the front for a 40 K. So, I'm building a 100mm front wheel for the state TT right now. I found a Planet-X 100 mm rim (blackwell labeled) for only $150. I'm lacing it up with sapim cx-ray spokes to an American Classic micro 58 hub.

Didnt somebody do wind tunnel testing on these 100+mm rims and find them to be worse than 404's etc.. Edge never came out with their 100+mm rim after testing it in the tunnel right?

"the 808 outperforms the 100 on effective wind angles of 0-25° while the 100 is superior at 25-30°. With typical effective wind angles falling between 10° and 20°, the 808 is generally the better bet." |

You know, I've never seen any data on 100 mm rims

I go down to an 85 or as low as a 46 in crosswinds. Otherwise I'll run the Stinger 9. |

Here is the quote I could find in my short amount of searching, there was more on the subject a while back.. The 118mm rim that they were working has been tested in the tunnel and it did not do as well as expected. I was told they would be making changes to make it faster and there is no expected availability date because of the work that still needs to be done. If they want to make a truly aerodynamic 118mm deep rim, they'll have to pay royalty fees. I don't think their is anyway to get around the fact that a rim that deep will stall out at fairly low angles without curved sidewalls. I did stumble across this photo and had a chuckle: http://www.blackwellresearch.com/ima...s/IMG_0699.JPG |
fabian likes his 808's for RRs.

The Edge 118's are a different animal from the OP's asking point. |
Not entirely, any non zipp/hed wheel @ 100mm is going to have the same issue.. without the bulge you are going to have flow separation.

Here is some actual data:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2v96yat.jpg Looks like I was wrong about the 101 losing out to the 404. |
Man those HED 60mm wheels suck. Cross those off the list. The 90's fair a little better

You're supposed to go to the grave insisting you were right. You'll be banned soon. You've broken the BF code of blindness. |
That graph is just awesome. The 101mm doesn't look bad at all... especially since you can get the entire rear wheel for $450 shipped.

No. No. No.

If it's too windy I'll just use a 404 front. Perhaps the 808 is faster in certain wind conditions, but for the money, these 100mm wheels procrit and I will be using can't be beat. |
What model year HEDs are those? They redesigned for 2009, numbers are much different than prior models.
