Have you ever been in a race with someone on Lightweights?

I stroll a few bike forums and always check out the "Post your bike" threads, etc. There are always a handful of bikes in there with Lightweight wheels on them.

I have never seen them on a bike in any race I have been to. Mind you, I race mostly in SoCal so you would think there would be some around. Not that I am on a search for them but maybe I just didn't notice.

Have you ever raced against someone actually riding Lightweight wheels?

My teammate crashed out at Valley of the Sun while on Lightweights. He broke his collarbone, shoulder blade and had a concussion. The wheels were barely scratched. Amazing.

On my first race this year was a guy on Time RXR with Lightweights.
He wasn't fast.

I don't think I'd notice Lightweights in a race. I do notice when people are riding with power taps. It seems I'm always sucking their wheel.

if one sees someone on lightweights it's best to immediately withdraw. No hope, duh.

Last year in a RR my field passed a guy who had a pair of lightweights, he had been dropped from the master's field that had started a few minutes in front of us. But he looked like he was 60 or older, and I think he owns a high end bike shop in the state.

I think you would notice, they sound like a jet engine roaring down the road... I've only seen them once and it was on a weekend hammerfest ride, they are sexy.

Yes.

Negative on the lightweights.

But I'll second the powertaps... The giant hub always catches my eye (as I'm flying by them of course )

....flying by which direction?

I don't notice any gear anyone rides anymore. Seriously. I don't know why. I guess I just don't care anymore.

To be honest I don't even race with my nice gear. Down and dirty crit bike with cheapish stuff and a heavy old powertap on it. It draws a lot of wheelsuckers and causes cases of whiplash as I fly by though.

Kid from Jittery Joe's Devo squad races Lightweights...on his 7900 equipped custom Vanilla! He's MAYBE 17 or 18 and got blown the F out the back of the 3 races in the Spring Series.

I rarely notice others' gear, so no idea if I've raced against someone on lightweights. only gear I've noticed this year was one of BD's team mates on a ridley noah and boras, and the proliferation of 1080s. they stand out, and everyone I know on them makes 'em go fast.

Do these people show up to the race in a Ferrari with a bike rack on the trunk?

I agree 100%. If you got the money or the hookups, why not ride the best stuff?

I was just curious. I do see them quite a bit on forums, but never seem to actually see them at races.

My team mate Alan has them. He places and wins 35+ races in the NY area on them, most recently the Tour de Parc Crit on LI.

Yes, there is a guy here in Colorado that rides them on a K2 road bike. I saw him with his Lightweights at the Santa Fe Century a couple weeks ago. He looks pretty fast, but still...
