Upgrade to Cat2

I am debating when I should submit my upgrade. I have right at the required number of points. I have been a Cat3 for 2 years and nearly had the points needed at the end of 2007. Then my racing went to the pot last year and I didn't gain very many, and the ones I had expired. Not this weekend but the weekend after is the State Crit and while I would stand a very good chance at getting it in Cat3, it really wouldn't benefit me any if I upgrade right after.
I do not have a team. I have been racing unattached all year. I tried to get hooked up but nothing ever worked out. I already have experience in the pro/1/2 field as a 3, for the first time in July 2007 and many more times after that. I also never finished last so that's a plus. I would say the right thing for me to do is to go ahead and upgrade, because me racing with the 3's is like a grown man taking candy from a baby. But as a 2 I will be getting molested on a regular basis.

If 3's are too easy, then do the P/1/2/3 races. If you need upgrade points then hop in a 3's race and win.

What do you mean you would not benefit if you upgraded right after? How would you benefit otherwise?

If the 3's are so easy for you, you should not be getting molested in the 2's or 1/2's. AS a 3 you can always do the 123 races, as a 2 you would be doing the same races. If you have the points, upgrade.

This should be true for pretty much everyone.

Well yes, I suppose there is. But I wouldn't be able to where my state champ jersey, as it wouldn't apply.

I got plenty to stay mind pack in a pro/1/2 race, unless there is a major climb. Then I get spit out the back along with the other half of the field. There are many former Jittery Joes riders in the local races around here now, HealthNet too.

Once I get the last point - if that ever happens - I will put in my upgrade immediately. It's all about getting faster and stronger. No better way to do it other than racing with the big kids.

how old are you?

what do you expect the next few years to bring your way lifewise (married, kids, job, house, relocating, etc.)?

the difference between Cat 3 and Cat 2 is BIG, much bigger than Cat 4 and Cat 3. Races are harder, longer, and strategic.

I'm similar to you in that I've flirted with upgrading to Cat 2 for 2 seasons now and am currently sitting on enough or nearly enough points to put in the upgrade request (dependent upon # of starters at a couple of races), and although I wouldnt claim to find cat 3 races to be beneath me since I've not won any, I dont find the style of racing all that enjoyable. However, I'm a 38 year old who isnt that talented, has family, job, house, i.e. lots of other life committments that limit my training time, and given that the 1/2/3 race is last one of the day at most events (it cuts into family time and screws up the entire day leading up to it), I've not upgraded to this point. My plan is to stay a 3 the balance of this year until after our district RR championships then re-evaluate and if I have the points, request the cat 2 upgrade.

Its not THAT big of a deal.... It supposed to be harder, longer, and more strategic when one upgrades

I've learned more about bike racing in the 4 months since I upgraded than I did in the last 2 seasons. Do it.

Upgrading will make you a better racer or make you stop all together. If you have a frail ego then going from winning to getting shelled at first may be to much to take but othwise it will be good for you.

Side note, do you guys actually have state championships for catagories other than 1/2? In the NCNCA there is an elite championship(1/2) crit/RR/TT and age group masters championships, no 3 or 4 jerseys.

yes.

MABRA has crit, TT, and RR championships including cat 3 and cat 4. also, there is the season long BAR competition for Senior (1/2), Category 3, Novice (4), then age-graded. The Novice is capped meaning one can only accumulate a fixed # of points, to discourage sand bagging in the cat 4s.

To wear the district champion jersey for the BAR in cat 3 or 4 rr/crit/tt championship or BAR championship, the rider must upgrade to the next category.
