I just checked the weather report and amazingly it looks like highs will probably be in the low to mid 80's. Much better than the 95 degree weather last year.

I'm in for the Cat 5 on Saturday, my first race ever. I rode the course this morning, be very careful at the cattle guards. Two of them have large gaps between the sections of grating that fall right in the middle of the road. The gap is easily wide enough to accomodate a wheel and would really ruin your day.

Out for a # of reasons...
1 - Location - I don't mean to be mean but after looking at the video on the website why would I want to race in a wasteland - I was almost tempted to give it a go until I watched that video
2 - 730 AM start for 50+ - I know it gets hotter as they day goes on but that's too early for old men like me
3 - No chance - I'd be racing for top 20, maybe top 30, w all the genetic mutants who are ex-pros, nat champs, world champs etc etc etc
When they bring it back to Vandy or someplace worth going I'm in. I'd get up early and would be willing to get my head caved in to race that course again.

I'll be making the 5 hr drive from S Barbara to do Pescadero. That course is a classic and just world class beautiful. I did it many years ago and loved it.
And just to drive home the point that location matters (sorry Bakersfield) I checked out the Diamond Valley course that will be used as the NCal Masters Districts course via pics on Steephill.com and it looks like it is is worth the drive. It's a beautiful setting up in the mountains.
I might do that at the end of July as my "District" RR. Hell I race in NCal a lot more than I do in SCal.

Still deciding between 30+ 3/4/5s or the 4s. If I do the 4s, I may be biting little more then I could chew. 60 mile is a bit long race for me and longest Ive ever done. I will have to carry extra bottles in my jersey, and I dont know how thats going to work out. I hope those cattle guards arent going to be a problem.

The guards themselves aren't that bad. The problem on two of the four guards you will cross is that instead of being constructed with one continuous panel of grating they are made with sections of grating. Over time with traffic these sections tend to drift apart resulting in a deep gap which runs parallel with the road that is more than wide enough to accomodate a wheel. I saw a local rider, who wasn't paying close enough attention, have their front wheel fall into one of these gaps. Their fork broke instantly at the crown and they messed their face up pretty bad on the subsequent face plant.

I'm just saying I remember a lot of warnings last year about the guards and during the actual race they weren't really a problem. Unlike Boulevard. I've seem some really crappy cattle guards. I'll definitely watch out for them though.

M45 4/5! Old and slow, where I belong!
I love the fact that in the M35+ 4/5 or 45+ 4/5 we actually have a "chance" at a result, adn the quality of racing is still pretty high given all the sandbagging that goes on. I only wish that SCal promoters understood their demographics <sigh>.
What cat r u in UD?
