If he would have sauntered over, chatted about the weather a bit, discussed post-race meal plans, and then provided the back-up bike...Menchov still would have won. He was just doing his job.

After watching the replay on YouTube, that was pretty amazing for 1: how quickly that bike slipped out from under him, which looked like it was just by the torque he was putting on it, cause he wasn't really turning. Second, how fast the mechanic really got out of the car was amazing.

For those that haven't seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPelUgfuP3E&feature=fvsr

Pretty much the polar opposite of the debacle with Rock Racing and Tyler Hamilton in the TT stage of this year's Tour of California. The RR guys need to take a page out of Rabobank's book--put a few bucks into training their wrenches--and spend less on hookers.

Profoundly incorrect. If one aspect of that bike change had gone awry, Menchov would have lost the Giro. Figure it out. 40 seconds is a slim margin when it depends on a bike change in the rain.

i like the fact that the mechanic then rode the last kilometer on Menchov's bike.

You do realize that he went down with under a kilometer to go, right? You do also realize why they have chase cars, mechanics, and spare bikes...right? He did what he was supposed to do, and what he had obviously been keyed up to do from the beginning of the course, considering the road conditions.

To be fair, though, the mech probably was caught a bit unawares, since Menchov went down on a straight stretch of road. That was the only remarkable thing I saw.

If the wrenches are well-trained, there is a higher probability of winning;
Then there is *more* money to spend on hookers.

You didn't think it was remarkable how quickly the wrench got out of the car, got the spare bike off the car, got the bike up to Menchov and got Menchov on his way? Even the jaded commentators were amazed at how fast that all happened.

Granted, Hendricks did what he was supposed to do, but he did it very, very well.

Watcing the coverage, I was really impressed at how fast that was. Then they had the replay with the mech hopping out of the moving car. I was more impressed.

I was also struck how the team mechanics look like a random dude on the street. They could learn a little from Nascar in the team uni department.

Just another example how it truly is a team sport. Even though it was his job, the wrench performed flawlessly. Nothing beats performing under pressure.

I liked this part too.. nothing like taking a 1k cruise in the Giro after/while watching your team leader win the thing.

I realize all of the above. You don't seem to realize that 40 seconds is 40 seconds, not 400 seconds, and that a crackerjack bike change helps him win the Giro, a botched bike change makes him lose the Giro.

But everyone else here gets it, so your oblivion hardly seems relevant.

i don't know. i think it's a bit of a stretch to say that that incident could have gone down in a way that would have cost him an additional forty seconds.

if we wanted to get technical we could look at the tape, figure out how fast he was going, and what time he would have rolled under the banner if he hadn't crashed... and figure out how much time he actually lost. menchov on the ground to back on a bike was only ten to eleven seconds. pile in some magical "all other things being equal" (getting back up to speed), it's hard to see even a botched bike change taking an additional forty seconds.

it was a great bike change, a dramatic moment, one we'll all remember, and whatnot. it may have won the giro by virtue of that fact, but could it have lost it? i'd say probably not. then again speculative opinions are like arseholes*.

*where would we be without 'em???
