Astana no Dinero

Well boys unless LA kicks up some dough Astana is not racing in July. The land of Borat didn't make their 6m Euro payment so no racey. If this holds true Cadel has his best shot ever at he overall.

I'd be very surprised if Astana didn't race the Tour and I hope they do. I'm dying to watch all the drama within the team.

Astana didn't race in France last July and Cadel was still the brides maid. Why should '09 be any different?

I am beyond confused. I read previous stories as indicating that Astana was good through July. Now they seem to be saying that their place in the Tour is uncertain. What's going on????

Of course they do...I stated in another thread that I'd be willing to bet Astana won't be racing the Tour. All the organizers have to do is find one thing wrong (ie money, doping, failure to comply with bio passports, etc) and they will deny Astana. I really think they are looking for a reason and they'll find one.

I think Astana wants Lance and his sheep off the team before Vino comes back later next month. Mark my words..... this isnt the end for Astana.

If you're in it for the advertising, how could you do better than Lance? Who outside of cycling can name one racer other than Lance? Be pro or con Lance, but the guy has got the advertising juice. I say we buy the team with stimulus money.

Try to be less egocentric and realize they aren’t targeting an American audience.

Yes, try to be less egocentric, and realize the Kazak's are being egocentric in focusing on Vino.

They wouldn’t be the first country wasting money promoting “nationalism” when the money could be better spent elsewhere.

The UCI is the organization demanding the financial payment, not the organizers. I don't think the UCI has any reason to not want the team in the tour, though I'm sure they're sick to death of the current sponsors.

Nor the last. I recall reading somewhere that the Brits are putting together a national road team.

I don't think the poster said anything about americans. You shouldn't assume things based on your inaccurate, preconceived notions. I'm pretty sure Lance would draw a crowd anywhere in the world.

Astana is about Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan riders.

No doubt that is true, however in the atmosphere of perceived government handouts to corporations, it's going to be tough for anyone, even St. Armstrong, to find a company that is willing to kick out nearly 8m US to fund a Euro centric sport like cycling.

They'll be in the Tour. Maybe not as Astana though. I'm not surprised they didnt cough up the cash, now that Vino will be in limbo until 7/24 and the other Kazakh rider has been suspended by team mgmt.

Wheels are turning....

Astana would not be having money issues if the Kazakh riders had not gotten the boot for doping.

I see your point, Vino really put this team together and if he were still on it the Kazakh government might be more forthcoming with the dough...I wouldn't discount the global financial crisis though...this may have as much or more to do with all this than Vino.

And the Tour can invite who they want, without recourse. They don't need a reason.
