PowerTap SL 2.4 Price check
There's a Powertap for sale locally. 2005 model SL 2.4 (has the carbon windows, with black ends), wired, in an Open Pro rim. Not sure of the spokes or count.
Comes with computer, docking station, CD, cassette, tire, tube, skewer. Missing HR strap (not a big deal, I have one that will probably work, if I even use it, which most of you say you don't). Only used lightly for a couple months (supposedly).
They say they'll take $600. Good deal? I've been wanting a PT, but I've been waiting for a good deal.
Also, would this one have the steel freehub body? I'd actually rather that so I don't have to get clips to keep from tearing up the aluminum ones.

Yeah, for some reason, the used prices haven't completely adjusted to that Competitive Cyclist deal yet. I have seen Open Pro wired SLs going for $525 on ebay though.

I had forgotten about that one. Good point. Basically the same thing, except brand new.
What would be a fair offer you think? Or should I just wait for a newer wireless one to come along that's a better deal?

I would say just buy the unit new from CC, which comes out around $700 with shipping. Got mine a little over a month ago and its been great. The wireless would have been a nice feature but for the cost its a really good deal.

Keep in mind that the older SL has a mass of 416g, and the Comp is 576g. That's only about 1/3 lb., but it is a difference.

Well, since it's basically brand new I'm gonna try for $500 (using the CC deal as an example). Couple months of use, lighter weight, matching wheel to my front. Saving $150 over the Comp is worth it I think.
Will I run into any warranty problems buying a used one?

How does one own a tool like a PT and not use it? 4 years old(2005) and only 2 months uses does not compute.
At a minimum I'd look at the freehub to see how it looks to make a guess on the claimed mileage and then spin it up and see what the computer odometer says.
If you have more than one bike wireless would be very nice and that price doesn't seem out of line for an SL2.4

Yeah, I was wondering that myself. Not sure why one would buy a PT, use it for two months, and then wait 4 years to sell it.
I offered $525, we'll see. I only have one road bike right now. I probably won't be building a new one for a while (I need to stop spending money and save up for school, unless the gov't comes through, should know soon). If I wanted it on another bike could I buy another harness/wire/sharkfin? Does it work like that?
I'm planning on installing it when I get there, just take some zip ties with me. Then I'll take a spin and see if it checks out. I might take a cassette tool and chain whip to see how the freehub body looks.

Psimet's prices are ridiculously good. I got a quote from him and was close to actually doing it, and then I got a reply from the seller that they'd take $525. I'm gonna take a look at it, and if it has as few miles as they say, and everything works, I'm gonna do that. They're gonna let me install it before I give them the money, just to make sure. I'm gonna remove the cassette and check the body too.
And get this, they want a check. Who takes a check on CL? Seriously. I'm good for it, but I'd never take a personal check from someone.

I don't care where he gets the stuff or what trucks they fall off of. I have been buying everything from him lately.

I also can not advertise my prices. Just is the way it is. I am in a very unique business situation. I can assure you there are no grey market goods.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Also....FWIW I wired the money last week to a friend in Taiwan....I have a mess of carbon rims (clincher and tubular) in process.

Sorry I seem so cryptic - I am trying to prevent "advertising" or otherwise conducting business on Bikeforums. It's a thin line in my opinion and I respect the forum enough to try to do the right thing.

I know... So tempted. However, I enjoy all of my appendages attached to my body. My wife might make sure that not all of them stay intact if I buy any more large bike related purchases at the moment.
Like some of those carbon rims, laced to a PowerTap with some CX-Ray spokes...

Well, I bought it. Turns out it WAS a 2.4 SL like she originally said. Obviously not a 2005 model since they didn't exist then. I think it's 2007? Firmware was 5.5 I think. It looked brand new from what I could tell. Did the stomp test, came out at 285 instead of 304, which is about 6.5%. Seemed good enough. The Saris guy I e-mailed this morning actually replied with this -
The “stomp test” is not a useful or accurate way to measure a Power Tap.
An out-of-warranty repair charge is $200.00
I had asked him about doing the stomp test before buying a used PT, and how much it would be to fix if it turned out to be bad. (fully expecting him not to respond since I'm not even a customer, and not a potential customer either)
Anyway, I felt bad only paying $525 for a basically brand new SL 2.4. So I gave her $600. It was one of substructure's teammates actually, who was selling it for a friend. She said she rode for Giordana.
Couldn't get the cassette off though. It was Shimano supposedly, but the lockring was different from mine. I have the FR-5 tool, and looking at the Park Website it looks like the BBT-5 (campy tool) might fit it. It's a 10 speed, so I'll have to wait until I can get the cassette off to use it. Maybe someone can bring me a tool to Orr Rd tonight.
I has the power!

Congrats on the PT! It's gonna be fun...
Stomp test is accurate if you don't actually stomp on it. If you hang weights off the crank, lock the rear brake, tip it up into a wheelie, and tip it back and forth until you see the max torque, then it gets accurate. When you see the highest torque value will be when the crank is horizontal. Weigh your weights at the post office, and mark the weight on them with a marker so you don't forget next time.
If you've got a Campy FHB, you can sell it on ebay and essentially get some of your Shimano FHB money back. Best price I've seen on a Shimano FHB is https://www.bikeman.com -- but not by much (great shop though).

Yeah, I actually stomped on it. Well, not stomped, but stood on it with one foot and the crank-arm as horizontal as I could get it, while balancing against the car with my hand. I had to guesstimate my weight with clothing and shoes.
She just e-mailed me back, her friend does ride Campy. Guess I'll be heading to the shop this afternoon, I can leave work a bit early. If I get lucky she's using the special Campy cassette on a Shimano FHB. Otherwise I'll need a new FHB. That price is so close to MSRP I'll probably give my LBS some business. I like them.

It really sounds like you scored the campy setup I was looking for earlier this year. Now I really hate you.

I think you're right about the lockring being Shimano on the special cassette. But this one is for some PowerTaps, I'm not sure if the SL 2.4 is one of them.
I'll sell you the FHB and the cassette if you want. I'm not paying to ship them to Alaska though, that's all you.

I'm actually interested in the cassette, depending on what it is as a I need my granny gears.
Does it look to have as little use as the PT?
PM me with what it is and what you want for it and we'll talk.
My PT only has a thousand miles on it so I'd probably hold off on the FHB.
