Mildly interesting wheel disc observation

I just tried out a rear wheel disc for the 1st time on a long practice outing and noticed that something was oddly different -- the wind noise around the ears from my everyday helmet was virtually gone! That was really unexpected. Normally I get a very loud turbulent wind noise above about 20 mph.

So, the disc is somehow able to affect the aerodynamics of my head. Cool. That's really about it I guess.

Tail wind? A disc wheel will not change the air around your head.

Whoa. You don't play fair. Is that actually simulating the wheel rotations or just the linear velocity?

you must have been going really fast and compressed the air in front of the rear wheel.

Um, you didn't also switch to an aero helmet did you!?

If not, maybe your Reticular Activating Cortex was just zoned into the *new sound of the disk and tuning out the wind...

Of course it does. Because air is incompressible at these velocities, the pressure field is modified everywhere. Now the question is can this difference be detected by a rider?

Just my everyday helmet.

Wait, let me run a quick simulation and produce a brainwave plot on that theory. It is sure to expose your ignorance and quash your boyish enthusiasm.
